Shirley Chen<\/strong> (D\u00ecdi) experiences being white through Mckenna Grace<\/strong> (Five Nights at Freddy\u2019s 2) in the trailer for Slanted<\/strong>, described as \u201cMean Girls meets The Substance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teen body horror comedy opens in theaters nationwide on March 13<\/strong> via Bleecker Street.<\/p>\n

It follows Joan Huang, who idolizes the popular girls and dreams of being prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like all the past queens whose portraits line her high school halls.<\/p>\n

Enter Ethnos: a mysterious cosmetic surgery clinic that turns people of color white. Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up a beautiful blonde destined for the crown, but at what cost?<\/p>\n

Vivian Wu<\/strong> (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan<\/strong> (\u201cNever Have I Ever\u201d), Amelie Zilber<\/strong> (\u201cGrown-ish\u201d), and Fang Du<\/strong> also star.<\/p>\n

Writer-director Amy Wang<\/strong> (\u201cThe Brothers Sun\u201d) makes her feature debut on the project, which premiered at last year\u2019s SXSW and took home the Narrative Grand Jury Award.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an immigrant, I\u2019ve always been aware that I looked different,\u201d Wang commented. \u201cAs a teenager trying desperately to fit in, I used to wake up and wonder, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t life just be easier if I were white?\u2019 Slanted is a satirical exploration of whiteness that challenges that question. It examines the cost of chasing acceptance, and what it means to abandon yourself in the process. Is belonging worth losing who you are for a system that was never built to value you?\u201d<\/p>\n

From Tideline Entertainment and Mountain Top Pictures, producers include Wang, Trevor Wall, Adel \u201cFuture\u201d Nur, Cameron Boling, and Mark Ankner.<\/p>\n

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review<\/a>, \u201cAs personal as Slanted feels, the superficial nature of its satire winds up softening a lot of its sharper edges. That likely suits its teen demographic well but won\u2019t be as winsome for seasoned horror fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slanted is rated R for \u201clanguage, some sexual material, teen drug use, and brief violent content\/bloody images.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grace can next be seen in Scream 7<\/a> on February 27, followed by The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping<\/a>, out November 20. She also just signed on to play Daphne in Netflix\u2019s \u201cScooby-Doo<\/a>\u201d series.<\/p>\n
