{"id":344973,"date":"2026-02-19T08:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T08:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/344973\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T08:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T08:19:07","slug":"three-multinational-companies-paid-close-to-50-of-states-corporate-tax-in-2024-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/344973\/","title":{"rendered":"Three multinational companies paid close to 50% of State\u2019s corporate tax in 2024 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Just three companies \u2013 technology groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> and pharma group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eli-lilly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eli-lilly\/\">Eli Lilly<\/a> \u2013 were responsible for almost half the corporation tax collected by the State in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-fiscal-advisory-council\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-fiscal-advisory-council\">Irish Fiscal Advisory Council<\/a> (Ifac) estimates that the three US multinationals paid 46 per cent \u2013 or around \u20ac13 billion \u2013 of the \u20ac28.1 billion collected that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It has warned that a heavy reliance on a limited number of companies for a substantial tax take \u201ccarries significant risk\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the budgetary watchdog does not name the companies involved, publicly available financial statements indicate that iPhone maker Apple paid approximately \u20ac5.8 billion in corporate tax here in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This was alongside the \u20ac14 billion it paid as a result of its high-profile tax battle with the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Separate accounts show Apple\u2019s tech rival Microsoft, which employs about  6,400 people in Ireland, paid approximately \u20ac4.8 billion in tax here in 2024.  Eli Lilly, which manufactures the ingredients for its top-selling weight loss drugs Zepbound and Mounjaro in Ireland, paid about  \u20ac2.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Drug giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pfizer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pfizer\/\">Pfizer<\/a> was previously in third position in terms of Ireland\u2019s top corporate taxpayers, but a fall-off in earnings in 2024 as demand for its Covid vaccine and medicine slumped saw it eclipsed by Eli Lilly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ifac\u2019s report highlights what it describes as the \u201cexceptionally concentrated\u201d nature of Ireland\u2019s corporate tax base, with just two companies responsible for \u20ac11 billion or almost 40 per cent of receipts in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It notes that corporation tax here almost doubled between 2021 and 2024, \u201clargely driven by increased payments from the top three payers\u201d. However, it warns that as \u201ccorporation tax revenues become more concentrated, they also become more risky\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/02\/11\/central-bank-boss-urges-government-to-save-more-of-states-tax-windfall\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Central Bank boss urges Government to save more of State\u2019s tax windfallOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFuture receipts could be much higher or lower than current levels,\u201d the budgetary watchdog says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On a positive note, it says the two highest-paying tech companies continue to perform strongly. Both firms reported double-digit global revenue growth in 2025 \u201cand market analysts expect this growth to continue into 2026 at least, supported by strong demand for their latest products and services\u201d, it says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council also notes that Ireland appears to be a key manufacturing base for the active ingredient used to make hugely popular weight-loss and diabetes medicines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHigher sales of these medicines in 2025 increased corporation tax receipts in Ireland. Some of this was because one large pharma group front-loaded some exports to the US ahead of expected tariffs,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eli Lilly shipped approximately $42.3 billion (\u20ac36.4 billion) of ingredients for its weight-loss drugs from Ireland to the US in the first four months of last year in a bid to avoid tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Corporate tax receipts are expected to rise again in 2026 as a new minimum global tax rate of 15 per cent rate, agreed as part of an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development  agreement on international tax in 2021, kicks in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/27\/government-spending-rising-faster-than-appropriate-level-says-ifac\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Government spending is rising faster than appropriate levels, says IfacOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Estimates suggest  this higher rate could yield an additional \u20ac5 billion in receipts for the exchequer.
