\u00a0Hilary Duff<\/a> is getting candid about her relationship with her father.<\/p>\n In an interview with Rolling Stone<\/a> published on Thursday, Feb. 19, the singer and actress opened up about a song on her forthcoming album titled “The Optimist,” where she dives into her complicated relationship with her dad.<\/p>\n “I wish I could sleep on planes \/ And that my father would really love me,” Duff, 38, sings.<\/p>\n Speaking with the outlet, Duff admitted that there’s “times where I talk to my dad and times where I don’t talk to my dad.”<\/p>\n “I do have a pretty sunny disposition, but a lot of s— has gone down, and that\u2019s life,” she said.<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the interview, she discussed her track “We Don’t Talk,” which fans speculated was about her relationship with her sister Haylie<\/a> after she played it at a concert in London.<\/p>\n “‘Cause we come from the same home, the same blood \/ A different combination but the same lock,” she sings on the song.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel almost like when I got divorced [in 2015], where I dealt with it privately, and then the news comes out and you\u2019re like, ‘Okay, great. I\u2019m going to deal with this all over again,'” Duff told the outlet.\u00a0“I was prepared, a little bit. I made a choice to put that song on my record. That\u2019s definitely the most lonely part of my life, and I struggled with, \u2018Am I going to share this?'”<\/p>\n She added, without specifying who the song is about, “People have known my life since I was a child, and so they know all the characters in it and they know what I\u2019m talking about. For me, it was important to be open about that theme. It genuinely came from the heart.”<\/p>\n Frazer Harrison\/Getty<\/p>\n Duff’s candid comments come after she opened up to Glamour<\/a>\u00a0about her family dynamics.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who\u2019s born into something,” she told the outlet. “Just because you\u2019re born into a family doesn\u2019t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street.”<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve had a very complicated life, and my parents had a very complicated thing,\u201d she added. \u201cI know it\u2019s not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, Why share now? I guess I just felt ready.\u201d<\/p>\n Duff previously opened up about her relationship with her father, Robert, on several songs on her 2007 album Dignity. At the time, she suggested her dad had an extramarital affair \u2014 and he confirmed it in a 2008 interview with Inside Edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n Duff’s new album luck… or something\u00a0\u2014 her first in over 10 years \u2014 comes out on Friday, Feb. 20.
