An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a> says it has identified a man who was critically injured in an assault in the Temple Bar area<\/a> of Dublin earlier this week. <\/p>\n

The force released a photograph of a tattoo on the man\u2019s right forearm in the hope it might lead to information and on Saturday afternoon it thanked the public for their assistance. <\/p>\n

Two men were arrested on Friday in connection with the incident which happened on Cope Street at around 12.30am on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed said the pair, aged in their 20s and 30s, remained in custody under the provisions Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.<\/p>\n

The injured man, whose age is unknown, remains in a critical condition at Dublin\u2019s Beaumont Hospital, An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na said in a statement.<\/p>\n

It is understood the man is not able to communicate with medical staff or garda\u00ed after he was brought to hospital and no next of kin initially came forward. <\/p>\n

He suffered serious head injuries and remained in a coma on Friday. The extensive nature of the injuries to his face were complicating efforts to determine his identity.<\/p>\n

The force released an image of a tattoo on the man\u2019s right forearm. The blue and white tattoo features the words \u201cCeol is Beatha\u201d, ceol meaning music and beatha meaning life. <\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed again appealed to anyone who was in the Cope Street area between midnight and 1am on Wednesday, and who may have information about the incident, to come forward.<\/p>\n

When asked about the assault on Friday, Minister for Justice Jim O\u2019Callaghan and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly expressed concern for the victim but insisted Dublin is a safe city.<\/p>\n

Kelly said Dublin is \u201ca big international European city\u201d and \u201cunfortunately, sometimes there will always be incidents like this\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just the nature of big cities,\u201d said Kelly. \u201cBut Dublin is a safe city. Ireland is a safe country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Minister encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact garda\u00ed. He said given the size of Dublin\u2019s population \u201cunfortunately, at times, there are going to be terrible assaults\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, he reaffirmed his view that \u201cDublin is a safe city\u201d.<\/p>\n
