Nearly 50 years after one legendary rock band’s mainstream debut, fans are raring for a correction to what many perceive to be a longtime “massive snub.”<\/p>\n
Despite being eligible for nomination to the Rock\u00a0& Roll\u00a0Hall of Fame<\/a> for nearly 25 years, Boston<\/a> has not once been added to the ballot\u2014an “insane” oversight to those who love the band and appreciate the mark it’s made on all the acts that have since followed in its footsteps.<\/p>\n Just months ahead of the milestone anniversary<\/a>, one fan account dedicated to classic rock took to X to vent, “Imagine not being in the Rock n Roll hall of fame 50 years later!!!”<\/p>\n SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk<\/strong> agreed it was a “massive massive snub” due to both the “enorm[ity]” of the album and the “innovations” from the band’s founder, Tom Scholz<\/a><\/strong>\u2014sparking some debate on the social media platform.<\/p>\n What Makes Boston Eligible for the Hall of Fame?<\/p>\n According to the Hall of Fame<\/a>, the criteria for nomination is simply to have 25 years pass since the release of an act’s first commercial recording. A formal nomination committee selects a group of artists each year, and then sends a ballot out to over 1,200 “historians, members of the music<\/a> industry and artists\u2014including every living Rock Hall inductee,” with the five to seven performers who get the most votes being inducted each year.<\/p>\n Many fans say it’s “unacceptable” that Boston hasn’t even been considered in the last two and a half decades, pointing out how “Boston’s sound has influenced a lot of music and still is.”<\/p>\n “It is criminal for them not to be in the rock and roll hall of fame,” another emphasized.<\/p>\n “The best debut album of all time,” someone else boldly declared. “There are some honorable mentions, but this one sits at the top.”<\/p>\n Not Everyone Agrees Boston Is Worthy of Nomination<\/p>\n The album in question is the hard rock group’s debut, self-titled album, which was released on Aug. 25, 1976 and sold over 20 million units<\/a> worldwide. The album debuted above 100 on the charts, but reached the Top 10 within just six weeks, peaking at No. 3<\/a>. Meanwhile, their debut single, “More Than a Feeling” hit No. 5 on Billboard\u2019s Hot 100.<\/p>\n However, the first of the band’s six albums was far and above its top performer, and other fans argue that one hit isn’t enough to earn Hall of Fame status.<\/p>\n “One great album, not enough for me,” one stated simply.<\/p>\n “They weren\u2019t even a real band technically,” another argued. “They went what, 10 years before releasing a 2nd<\/a> album that turned out to be blah…”<\/p>\n “Meh – they had like 3 albums and we had in jammed down our throats on FM radio for decades,” another shrugged off. “Innovation followed by what? Resting on their laurels from the 70s? Na uh.”<\/p>\n Founder Tom Scholz Is an Accomplished Musical Inventor<\/p>\n Scholz, a graduate<\/a> of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, used some of his band earnings to launch Scholz Research & Development, Inc., where he established some 30 patents, which included the Power Soak\u2014the first-ever commercial guitar amplifier\u00a0attenuator\u2014the Rockman\u2014a portable headphone guitar amplifier\u2014and the Rockmodules\u2014a guitar effect device.<\/p>\n As noted by Sweetwater<\/a>, several of Boston’s fellow rock legends put the Rockman to good use, and its results can be heard on Def Leppard\u2019s\u00a0“Hysteria,” ZZ Top\u2019s\u00a0“Afterburner,” and KISS\u2019s\u00a0“Animalize.”<\/p>\n But, should Scholz’s solo contributions as an inventor contribute to Boston’s consideration?
