{"id":354069,"date":"2026-02-24T17:01:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T17:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/354069\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T17:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T17:01:08","slug":"state-considers-accepting-gift-of-shuttered-limerick-rugby-space-to-open-womens-museum-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/354069\/","title":{"rendered":"State considers accepting gift of shuttered Limerick rugby space to open women\u2019s museum \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State is considering a gift offer from businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-mcmanus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jp-mcmanus\/\">JP McManus<\/a> of his shuttered \u20ac30 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rugby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rugby\/\">Rugby<\/a> Experience in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\">Limerick<\/a> in order to turn it into a women\u2019s museum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Culture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-o-donovan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-o-donovan\">Patrick O\u2019Donovan<\/a> will bring a memo to Cabinet on Tuesday informing colleagues that the billionaire businessman has offered to gift the property to the State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Donovan will seek approval to explore the possibility of changing the landmark building on O\u2019Connell Street into a new branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-museum-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-museum-of-ireland\/\">National Museum of Ireland<\/a> which will house a \u201cpermanent, dedicated women\u2019s museum\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The six-storey International Rugby Experience (IRE) was funded by a \u20ac30 million gift from the McManus family foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It had a high-profile opening in May 2023, attended by a large number of international and former rugby players including Johnny Sexton, Paul O\u2019Connell and Keith Wood. Wood and O\u2019Connell had been involved in the project since its inception. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the visitor experience shut its doors permanently within 19 months. It had projected visitor numbers of 100,000 annually but the numbers who passed through its doors were considerably lower than that, at about 60,000 in the first year. Its accounts showed that it recorded a loss of \u20ac1.04 million in operating costs in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time of its closure in December 2024, the number of staff had been reduced from 31 to 20 during 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/07\/31\/the-inside-story-of-jp-manuss-sin-binned-limerick-rugby-attraction\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The inside story of JP McManus\u2019s shuttered \u20ac30m Limerick rugby attractionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some months before its closure, McManus offered the building as a gift to Limerick City and County Council in addition to a payment of \u20ac1.2 million to cover most of its projected losses until the end of 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council declined the offer in October 2024, but not before the matter had led to deeply divided views among councillors and political parties in Limerick. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McManus later attended a private meeting of the council to put across the case for the Council accepting the gift. It is understood that in an emotional contribution, he told councillors the response of the local authority had been disheartening. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest development will see the State exploring the feasibility of a women\u2019s museum in the shuttered building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Donovan, who is a TD for Limerick County, said he would like to begin a detailed consultation process with the National Museum of Ireland, the Office of Public Works, the McManus foundation, and the Department of Public Expenditure, \u201cwith a view to acquiring the property\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A museum dedicated to women is one of the key recommendations of a report of the Advisory Committee on Women\u2019s Stories, which was adopted by the Government in December. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It recommended a \u201cpermanent, dedicated physical museum, to give visibility, legitimacy and recognition to women\u2019s representation, experiences and voices, in all their diversity\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Consultants commissioned by Limerick Mayor John Moran estimated the rugby experience would have needed to attract over 70,000 visitors a year to break even. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, O\u2019Donovan said it was the \u201cright thing to do\u201d for the Government to accept the gift of the building as a home for a museum celebrating women. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAll of our national cultural institutions, with the exception of the Crawford Gallery, are either entirely, or almost entirely, based in Dublin.
