{"id":356963,"date":"2026-02-26T07:57:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T07:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/356963\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T07:57:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T07:57:20","slug":"cake-architecture-draws-on-local-landmarks-for-watchhouse-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/356963\/","title":{"rendered":"Cake Architecture draws on local landmarks for WatchHouse cafe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cake-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cake Architecture<\/a> aimed to distil the &#8220;atmosphere of the Thames and its embankment&#8221; inside this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cafes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coffee shop<\/a>, which features a carved ceiling void and a monolithic espresso counter.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the Millennium Bridge House, a building on the Thames alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/foster-partners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foster + Partners<\/a>-designed Millennium Bridge, the 190-square-metre <a href=\"https:\/\/watchhouse.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WatchHouse<\/a> cafe was designed to evoke the nearby St Paul&#8217;s Cathedral and Tate Modern.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2299762 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/watchhouse-cake-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1054.jpg\" alt=\"Steel tables and wooden chairs\" width=\"1911\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Wood panelling creates a warm interior at WatchHouse<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have tried to distil this atmosphere of the Thames and its embankment,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/cake-architecture.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cake Architecture<\/a> founding partner Hugh Scott Moncrieff told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The starting point was the contrast between the monumental London skyline; St Paul&#8217;s, Tate Modern, Tower Bridge and the fleeting, atmospheric quality of the Thames,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;That tension between permanence and movement, solid form and shifting light, became the core idea of the space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2299757 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/watchhouse-cake-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x574.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe with circular ceiling void\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1593\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The cafe has a &#8220;monolithic&#8221; espresso counter<\/p>\n<p>The surrounding architecture influenced both the scale of the space and specific architectural details in the WatchHouse cafe, which has a dramatic circular ceiling void.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The carved ceiling void references the geometry and procession of St Paul&#8217;s dome, while the monolithic espresso counter draws from the industrial language of the Tate Modern and the infrastructural character of the river,&#8221; Moncrieff said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The interior translates these external forms into a more intimate spatial experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2299758 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/watchhouse-cake-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1127.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe with concrete floor\" width=\"1788\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A concrete floor was inspired by mudlarking<\/p>\n<p>The wood-clad interior, made from timber and cherry veneer, also features plenty of contrasting stainless-steel details, as well as a concrete floor that Cake Architecture introduced in a nod to the nearby river.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Timber and introduces warmth and tactility, while the metals provide reflectivity and diffusion of light,&#8221; Moncrieff explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The concrete floor is reminiscent of the Thames river bed and inspired by the practice of &#8216;mudlarking&#8217;.
