Regular exercise could be turning back the age of your brain\u2014by almost a year. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It didn\u2019t take a lot of exercise, either. When people exercised for 150 minutes a week, their brains stayed younger. (If the number sounds familiar, it\u2019s what multiple health organizations, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/guidelines\/adults.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/guidelines\/adults.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"CDC\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CDC<\/a> recommends for physical activity.) All they did was break their workouts into two 60-minute cardio sessions in the researchers\u2019 lab, followed by a half-hour home workout.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">When scientists reviewed the MRI brain scans before and after the year-long trial, they saw that the brains of the regular exercisers were 0.6 years younger than when they first started out. Researchers also looked at the brains of people who didn\u2019t work out at all. Their brains were 0.35 years older. Put together, the difference in brain aging between both groups was nearly a year. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThese absolute changes were modest, but even a one-year shift in brain age could matter over the course of decades,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventhealth.com\/institute\/adventhealth-research-institute\/team\/lu-wan\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.adventhealth.com\/institute\/adventhealth-research-institute\/team\/lu-wan\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Lu Wan\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lu Wan<\/a>, research neuroscience data scientist at the AdventHealth Research Institute and lead study author. Wan and her team unveiled the full results in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625000602\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2095254625000602\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Journal of Sport and Health Science\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Journal of Sport and Health Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Considering the 130 people in the study were between 26 and 58, the findings suggest it\u2019s still possible to start helping your brain now even if you\u2019ve been sedentary for most of your life. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cEach additional \u2018year\u2019 of brain age is associated with meaningful differences in later-life health,\u201d adds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventhealth.com\/institute\/adventhealth-research-institute\/team\/kirk-erickson-phd-1647\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.adventhealth.com\/institute\/adventhealth-research-institute\/team\/kirk-erickson-phd-1647\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kirk Erickson, PhD\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kirk Erickson, PhD<\/a>, director of translational neuroscience at AdventHealth Research Institute and senior author. \u201cFrom a lifespan perspective, nudging the brain in a younger direction in midlife could be very important. If we can slow brain aging before major problems appear, we may be able to delay or reduce the risk of later-life cognitive decline and dementia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How Does Exercise Help Maintain a Younger Brain?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The researchers looked at several potential pathways exercise might work through\u2014changes in fitness, body composition, blood pressure, or potential changes in a protein called BDNF that helps promote the creation of new brain connections. While exercise improved people\u2019s overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a46687019\/fit-at-any-age-new-frontiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a46687019\/fit-at-any-age-new-frontiers\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fitness\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fitness<\/a>, the team did not find that any of these measures could statistically explain the reversal in brain aging in this trial.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThat was a surprise,\u201d Wan says. \u201cWe expected improvements in fitness or blood pressure to account for the effect, but they didn\u2019t. Exercise may be acting through additional mechanisms we haven\u2019t captured yet, such as subtle changes in brain structure, inflammation, vascular health or other molecular factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Still, there\u2019s no need to wait for scientists to figure out the mechanism.
