{"id":35881,"date":"2025-09-01T05:16:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T05:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/35881\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T05:16:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T05:16:07","slug":"cork-man-takes-next-step-on-journey-to-becoming-a-priest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/35881\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork man takes next step on journey to becoming a priest\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">The Diocese of Cloyne celebrated the ordination of Tiernan Burke as a new transitional deacon in Whitechurch on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">A native of Whitechurch, Mr Burke will work in ministry in the diocese, undertaking parish duties similar to a priest, ahead of the next stage of becoming ordained as a priest in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Bishop of Cloyne William Crean, the ordaining prelate, was joined by priests and deacons from across the diocese. Also in attendance were members of Tiernan\u2019s family, his classmates, and friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Memorable<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Speaking to  The Echo, Mr Burke reflected on what was a memorable occasion at the ordination Mass, celebrated at St Patrick\u2019s Church in Whitechurch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cHow powerful the ceremony was, the liturgy with the bishop and the choir. There were more than 40 priests there from across the diocese and beyond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe response of the community, they cleaned up the whole grounds of the church&#8230; flower arrangements and marquees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cThe whole village was cleaned up and houses painted. There was bunting put up. There was a big sign also up in Whitechurch. So, it has been powerful, the response, and what people have done for me.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Burke said that from a young age he had wanted to become a priest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Journey<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He worked as a manager at Whitechurch Service Station for many years, before commencing his journey to becoming a priest in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt has always been at the back of my mind. But I eventually did something about it when I was 32 or 33,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cI always dreamed of getting ordained in Whitechurch. When the church was rebuilt by the community back in 1987\/1988, my father was one of the architects involved.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cSo the church in Whitechurch is very special to me.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Burke made the first step in the formation process by entering the Royal English College in Valladolid in Spain, in preparation for joining the National Seminary in Maynooth in September 2019, and commencing his academic study of philosophy.
