{"id":359245,"date":"2026-02-27T15:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/359245\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T15:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:02:08","slug":"man-22-charged-with-murder-of-english-tourist-in-dublins-temple-bar-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/359245\/","title":{"rendered":"Man (22) charged with murder of English tourist in Dublin\u2019s Temple Bar \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man has been charged with the murder of an English tourist who died two months after being injured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-bar\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temple-bar\/\">Temple Bar<\/a> area last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Darragh O\u2019Brien (22), of Beechfield Heights, Clonee, Dublin 15, was initially charged with assault causing harm to Anthony Herron in relation to the Temple Bar Square incident in the early hours of August 21st last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Herron, who had just left a pub when the incident happened, was from London and aged in his 40s. He was married with one child and awaiting the arrival of a second. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Brien was granted conditional bail after an initial court appearance last year, but the charge was upgraded to murder when he appeared before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/district-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/district-court\/\">Dublin District Court<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">Garda<\/a> Colin Coyne Delaney said O\u2019Brien made \u201cno reply\u201d when charged. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The garda told Judge Gerard Jones that the Director of Public Prosecutions had authorised the withdrawal of the assault charge and a single count of murder was to proceed on indictment to the Central Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Brien could not apply for bail on Friday as an application must be made before the High Court in murder cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Holly Laher, solicitor for the accused, asked that O\u2019Brien, who is yet to enter a plea, be remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Legal aid was granted and prosecutors must complete a book of evidence and serve it on him before a return-for-trial order is granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At his first hearing, the court was told O\u2019Brien was \u201ccouch surfing\u201d with friends around the time of the incident. It was claimed that he kicked Herron in the head following an alleged verbal altercation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Herron was initially taken to St James\u2019s Hospital that night but was transferred to Beaumont Hospital to undergo emergency surgery.
