Though she sometimes uses her electric bike to commute, Ms Mongey fractured her foot while holidaying in Spain recently and is now completely reliant on public transport. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said she has been experiencing problems with the service for the last year during morning and evening times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The S8 bus route, operated by private provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/go-ahead-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/go-ahead-ireland\/\">Go-Ahead Ireland<\/a>, runs between Citywest and D\u00fan Laoghaire, with services scheduled for every 15 minutes at peak times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2025\/02\/06\/bus-operators-hit-with-5m-in-penalties-amid-fresh-complaints-over-ghost-buses\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bus operators hit with \u20ac5m in penalties as Go-Ahead draws fresh complaints over \u2018ghost buses\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s no dependability on the bus,\u201d she said. \u201cEvery day I wake up with the fear of I\u2019m going to be delayed. If I was to be in the office for 9am, I\u2019d be leaving the house at 7am. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLast week I had to be in the office for 8am and some mornings I didn\u2019t make it in because the bus was delayed or didn\u2019t turn up. I feel really frustrated when I get to the office. I\u2019m trying to explain to people that even though I only live 10 minutes away by car, the bus service just doesn\u2019t run. Photograph: Bryan O\u2019Brien\/The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Mongey said she has raised the issue continuously with Go-Ahead Ireland, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\">National Transport Authority (NTA)<\/a>, local politicians and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\">Department of Transport<\/a> over recent months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTwo of my colleagues who are living in Citywest, they were getting the S8, but have started to take the red Luas line into town and then the green line out [to Leopardstown] because the bus keeps getting cancelled and they can\u2019t turn up late to work. One of them is leaving the house at 6.30am,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was in San Sebasti\u00e1n and Seville in Spain a few weeks ago, where the economy is not the same as Ireland. They have bus services constantly. I used them for a whole week and nothing was cancelled and they have services all around the city. Then I came home and was like, \u2018this is ridiculous\u2019. These issues are primarily mechanical breakdowns, and \u201cmore broadly, heavy traffic and congestion affecting the route\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, it added that more than 97 per cent of its contracted kilometres were operated, according to most recent figures. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are currently in the process of recruiting 10 new vehicle mechanics who will join GAI (Go-Ahead Ireland) in September, enhancing our maintenance capacity, and we are also in the process of training 100 new drivers who will operate across our service routes,\u201d a spokesman for the company said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The NTA said it acknowledged that an inadequate level of service was provided on the S8 route in recent months, and \u201cwe apologise for the difficulties and inconvenience experienced by passengers\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe operator and the NTA meet weekly to discuss performance issues,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cGo-Ahead Ireland has provided the NTA with an updated S8 timetable to better reflect operating conditions. This timetable requires additional fleet and drivers to reflect longer journey times. It has been approved by the NTA and is due to be implemented in Q4 2025.
