{"id":362352,"date":"2026-03-01T12:11:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T12:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/362352\/"},"modified":"2026-03-01T12:11:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T12:11:09","slug":"chartered-flights-now-routine-says-minister-as-63-south-africans-deported-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/362352\/","title":{"rendered":"Chartered flights now \u2018routine\u2019 says Minister as 63 South Africans deported \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chartered deportation flights are now a \u201croutine\u201d part of Ireland\u2019s immigration system, the Minister for Justice said as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/28\/family-at-centre-of-department-of-justice-protest-to-be-deported-to-south-africa\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/28\/family-at-centre-of-department-of-justice-protest-to-be-deported-to-south-africa\/\">54 adults and nine children were flown from Ireland to South Africa on Saturday night. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\">Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> has confirmed that the charter flight left Dublin shortly after 5pm on Saturday and landed in Johannesburg after 4am Irish time on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were 28 men, 26 women and nine children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-justice\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-justice\">Department of Justice<\/a>, the children were part of family units. They include Titilayo Oluwakemi Oyekanmi and her three sons, Samuel, Joseph and Genesis, who are aged between five and 18 and attended local schools and sports clubs in south Dublin. The family was at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2026\/02\/19\/family-facing-deportation-to-south-africa-relieved-by-temporary-reprieve\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2026\/02\/19\/family-facing-deportation-to-south-africa-relieved-by-temporary-reprieve\/\"> centre of a large protest outside the Department of Justice earlier this month.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was the second charter flight in 2026 and the eighth since the Government took office in early 2025. The Government confirmed that more operations are planned for this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The people on the flight were accompanied by members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a>, medical staff, an interpreter and a human rights observer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCharter flights are now a routine and essential part of immigration enforcement for the State,\u201d O\u2019Callaghan said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWithout effective enforcement measures, our immigration laws would be undermined, and I want to ensure that there is public confidence in the application of our laws in this area. If a person does not have a legal permission to be in the State, or has been involved in criminality, they will be removed,\u201d O\u2019Callaghan said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, the Garda said 10 of the 54 adults who were deported had been convicted of offences in this jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/02\/28\/family-at-centre-of-department-of-justice-protest-to-be-deported-to-south-africa\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Family at centre of Department of Justice protest deported to South AfricaOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State Colm Brophy said that the \u201cmajority of South African nationals resident in Ireland are doing so legally, having entered the State though the various legal pathways available. They are welcome and contribute immensely to our economy and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It comes as former taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/leo-varadkar\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/leo-varadkar\">Leo Varadka<\/a>r has warned the Government may be engaging in \u201cperformative cruelty\u201d in its new immigration law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his weekly column in the Sunday Times, Varadkar welcomed some aspects of the new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/27\/concerns-raised-over-gaps-in-international-protection-bill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/27\/concerns-raised-over-gaps-in-international-protection-bill\/\"> International Protection Bill<\/a> but warned that strict limits on family reunification was a cause for concern. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Varadkar said that a new rule which does not allow someone to apply for reunification until two years after they have been given leave to remain in Ireland in practical terms meant keeping parents away from their children for four years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s four years of missed birthdays, Christmases, first days at school, illnesses, admissions to hospital. No provision is being made for extreme circumstances like a lost child from whom the refugee was separated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI understand the need for the Government to show that it is getting a handle on immigration but I fear that this particular proposal risks straying into the domain of performative cruelty. Even as someone who has no children, I know this just feels wrong.
