{"id":363501,"date":"2026-03-02T06:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T06:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/363501\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T06:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T06:10:09","slug":"so-many-street-lights-out-or-so-dim-in-cork-town-youd-need-a-cigarette-lighter-to-find-way-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/363501\/","title":{"rendered":"So many street lights out or so dim in Cork town, &#8216;you\u2019d need a cigarette lighter to find way around&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">So many lights are out in one tourist town that you\u2019d need a cigarette lighter to find you way around, according to the Mayor of County Cork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Meanwhile, in another tourist town several of its ornamental lights aren\u2019t working, and there\u2019s fears that somebody will be electrocuted if vandals keep tampering with an exposed electricity cable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">A meeting of the East Cork municipal district council, Mayor of County Cork Independent councillor Mary Linehan-Foley complained about the lights being out or so dim in parts of Youghal \u201cyou may as well have a cigarette lighter in your hand\u201d to see where you\u2019re going. She said it\u2019s especially dangerous around Moll Goggin\u2019s Corner and added that it\u2019s also an issue in an estate in the town where there are a lot of elderly residents \u201cand the lights are gone for months\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Fianna F\u00e1il councillor Ann Marie Ahern complained about \u201cblacked out areas\u201d of Midleton, specifically on Main Street and on Mill Road, which leads to and from the railway station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Both councillors won support from colleagues to write to the ESB and the council\u2019s lighting contractors Electric Skyline asking them to send representatives to a meeting of the municipal district council to explain why there are so many issues in the East Cork area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">&#8216;Beggars belief&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Social Democrats councillor Eamonn Horgan said the issues with lights \u201cbeggars belief\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Senior executive engineer Dave Clarke acknowledged \u201cthere are plenty of issues out there\u201d and public lighting is extremely important for safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI hear your frustration,\u201d he told councillors, and said he\u2019d discuss their complaints with senior council management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Meanwhile, at a municipal meeting in Cobh Labour councillor Cathal Rasmussen said many of that tourist town\u2019s Victorian-style ornamental lights were out of action in that town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He said some haven\u2019t been working properly \u201cfor years\u201d while others have a problem with timers as they stay on all day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Rasmussen, seconded by Independent councillor Ger Curley, asked officials to carry out a survey of all the public lights in the town, which they said they\u2019d do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He then turned his attention to dangerous acts of vandalism on an electric cable which could end up with somebody getting electrocuted.
