{"id":364557,"date":"2026-03-02T22:23:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T22:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/364557\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T22:23:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T22:23:14","slug":"six-nations-trophy-to-be-replaced-after-fire-damage-while-being-transported-in-ireland-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/364557\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Nations trophy to be replaced after fire damage while being transported in Ireland \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/six-nations\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/six-nations\/\">Six Nations<\/a> trophy is to be replaced after suffering fire damage while being transported by road last month, the organisers of the tournament have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood the trophy was being driven from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\/\">Limerick<\/a> to Dublin after an event when the vehicle transporting it was involved in an \u201cincident\u201d, and though nobody was hurt the trophy was damaged beyond repair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, Six Nations rugby said \u201cwhilst in transit during round three of the Guinness Men\u2019s Six Nations, an incident occurred involving the vehicle carrying the championship trophy\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThankfully no passengers were injured, however the trophy sustained fire damage, and following an assessment by the official trophy manufacturer, unfortunately it cannot be restored to its full presentation standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The firm that made it, London-based Silversmiths Thomas Lyte, who is also responsible for the English FA Cup and a number of other notable sports trophies, is to create a replacement to the same specifications in time for next year\u2019s tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The intention is to incorporate some of the original\u2019s materials into the replacement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the meantime, an existing replica, generally used for exhibitions, will be presented to the winners of this year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs is the case with most major international sports tournaments, there is an identical exhibition trophy which will be used for the remainder of the Championship, meaning the prestige and recognition of winning the Six Nations is unaffected,\u201d said the organisers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2026\/02\/27\/after-the-high-of-twickenham-simon-easterby-knows-wales-are-aiming-to-catch-ireland-cold\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">After the high of Twickenham, Simon Easterby knows Wales are aiming to catch Ireland coldOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The Six Nations trophy. Photograph: Glyn Kirk\/AFP via Getty Images        <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The now-damaged trophy was commissioned in 2015 to belatedly mark the expansion of the tournament to Six Nations. It has since been won by Ireland four times, more than any other team, most recently in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Outside of the period each year when the tournament is on, it is toured around schools, clubs and communities in order to promote the event and sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is made of 8kg of sterling silver and includes some gold plating. It is 75cm tall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland currently lie third in this year\u2019s championship table behind France and Scotland.
