{"id":366281,"date":"2026-03-03T21:49:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T21:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/366281\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T21:49:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T21:49:10","slug":"cost-of-home-heating-oil-soars-amid-widespread-travel-disruption-following-attacks-on-iran-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/366281\/","title":{"rendered":"Cost of home-heating oil soars amid widespread travel disruption following attacks on Iran \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\">Middle East conflict<\/a> on Irish consumers has been immediate with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\/\">home heating oil prices<\/a> soaring to \u201cdisgraceful\u201d levels, motor fuel climbing and the plans of thousands hoping to travel to Asia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\">Australia<\/a> in the weeks ahead up in the air. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The price of home heating oil has sparked particular concern with the cost climbing by around 40 per cent since last Friday, a spike which has prompted the Government to open a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\">Competition and Consumer Protection Commission<\/a> (CCPC) investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The average price of 500 litres of oil was \u20ac498 five days ago but jumped to close to \u20ac700 by Tuesday evening with many companies pricing it even higher representing an increase of close to 40 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The price of 500 litres of oil with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin<\/a>-based provider Butterly was \u20ac703 while Certa Oil was charging \u20ac690.99. Right Price Oil priced 500 litres at \u20ac699 with Corrib Oil charging \u20ac710.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One Dublin-based provider said demand since the beginning of the week was higher than during a cold snap. \u201cIt is like when we have snow and people are panicking. We are getting calls from people who have never called us before,\u201d the supplier said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dubbing the increases \u201cdisgraceful\u201d and \u201cpure price gouging\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\">Labour Party<\/a>\u2019s enterprise spokesman George Lawlor called on the Government to immediately introduce a maximum price order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/03\/02\/why-have-the-us-and-israel-attacked-iran-why-has-dubai-been-hit-could-the-conflict-spread\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why have the US and Israel attacked Iran? Why has Dubai been hit?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokeswoman for Minister for Enterprise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-burke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-burke\">Peter Burke<\/a> said he had asked the CCPC to examine pricing to ensure there were no increases for consumers \u201cwhich are not proportionate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The price of petrol and diesel has also climbed with prices now between 5 and 10 cent a litre dearer. Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> said there was \u201cno excuse for prices going up at the pumps yesterday, or indeed anywhere\u201d because Irish oil \u201cis coming from the North Sea and we don\u2019t want any price gouging going on\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response Kevin McPartland, the chief executive of the Fuels for Ireland umbrella group said Martin knew \u201cIreland does not set fuel prices \u2013 global markets do. When geopolitical shocks occur, wholesale prices move immediately. It makes no difference whether crude comes from the North Sea or elsewhere; petrol, diesel and heating oil are priced against international benchmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He pointed out a \u20ac1,300 delivery of home heating oil includes more than \u20ac330 in taxes and levies and said if the Taoiseach \u201cwants to protect Irish consumers from high energy prices, the most immediate and effective action lies not in examining retailers, but in examining the tax burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Looking to the longer term he said there were many \u201cmoving parts\u201d including supply, the price of crude and the strength or weakness of the dollar, which is the currency used in oil trading. \u201cIt is a volatile market but there is no risk to supply and I don\u2019t see anything that indicates high prices for a long period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile significant question marks hang over the travel plans of thousands of people with the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) describing the situation as \u201cfast moving and still very fluid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The president of the ITAA Tom Randles told The Irish Times that in the normal course of events around 2,500 people travel in and out of Dublin through Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha each day with most travelling to and from Asia, Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said airlines were only allowing cancellation options up to March 10th and all flights after that are currently scheduled to operate as normal.
