It&#8217;s important to start with a program that will keep you consistent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strength Exercises and Training Tips For Middle-Aged Women<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a middle-aged woman who\u2019s not super familiar with strength training, fear not: Experts share some beginner-friendly tips and exercises you can do right now (some even from the comfort of your home).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get an evaluation from your primary care provider.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before making any health changes or starting a new exercise routine, check in with your healthcare provider. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet your practitioner know your goals of starting a resistance program, and make sure that cardiac concerns, such as high blood pressure, are not a roadblock for you to start,\u201d said Yvonne Di Edwardo, a physical therapist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantichealth.org\/home\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Atlantic Health\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.atlantichealth.org\/home\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantic Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While you\u2019re there, she also suggested getting your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/exercise-equipment-good-bone-density-ud_l_67fd8cdae4b070cabdc3ef96\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"bone density\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"67fd8cdae4b070cabdc3ef96\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bone density<\/a> and balance evaluated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with at-home exercises.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Exercise doesn\u2019t have to be a lengthy, expensive, scary thing \u2014 a couple of days a week at home will do. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not need a gym membership,\u201d Hougen said. \u201cStart with body weight exercises, like squats, step-ups, modified pushups and planks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She encouraged focusing on your form to ensure you avoid injury. Checking with a personal trainer can help. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you get stronger, you can add light weights with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/bowflex-adjustable-weights_l_66796f13e4b0bd985dc53043\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"dumbbells\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66796f13e4b0bd985dc53043\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dumbbells<\/a> or kettlebells,\u201d Hougen added. \u201cResistance bands are also handy for a variety of exercises.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Di Edwardo shared some great starter exercises that use resistance bands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit to stand from a chair without using your hands. For an extra challenge, add a resistance band above your knees and put light pressure into the bands as you stand up.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supine march (basically, \u201cmarch\u201d while lying on your back) with resistance bands above your knees. <\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do gentle rows with resistance bands while standing or sitting. Pull the bands back to your chest with good posture.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side-step with a resistance band above your knees, using a countertop or wall to assist with your balance if necessary. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget about warming up beforehand. \u201cIt is always a good idea to warm up \u2014 even for a short walk or a small amount of time on a recumbent or upright bike is a good way to warm muscles,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Incorporate pelvic floor exercises.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may also experience urinary incontinence or the weakening of pelvic floor muscles during menopause. Resistance training can help. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn pelvic floor training, the use of resistance training, either bands or light weights, with appropriate integration of our pelvic floor muscles and breathing technique, can make challenges such as running, lifting and stair-climbing less stressful on our pelvic floor and aid in maintaining our bladder control,\u201d Di Edwardo explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.uthscsa.edu\/news-and-stories\/five-exercises-strengthen-your-pelvic-floor\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/cancer.uthscsa.edu\/news-and-stories\/five-exercises-strengthen-your-pelvic-floor\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor<\/a> include kegels, bridge pose, squats, pelvic tilts and \u201cbird dog.\u201d A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/reasons-pelvic-floor-therapist_l_6707e000e4b0f3da64560096\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"pelvic floor therapist\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"6707e000e4b0f3da64560096\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pelvic floor therapist<\/a> can work through those with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay attention to warning signs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When attending to your pelvic floor, Dubinskaya encouraged patients to \u201clift smarter\u201d by paying attention to warning signs. <\/p>\n<p>Examples include lower back tension, pelvic heaviness, a feeling of fullness or \u201csomething stuck\u201d in the vagina, symptoms that worsen at the end of the day and new urinary leakage during lifting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make it a fun, social activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be real: Exercise isn\u2019t always enjoyable. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/dont-feel-like-working-out-advice_l_62868322e4b0556e4a0b692a\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"fitness pros don\u2019t always want to work out\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"62868322e4b0556e4a0b692a\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fitness pros don\u2019t always want to work out<\/a>. To stick to a routine, you may want to grab a couple of friends or attend a class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some individuals, the social component to exercising is an added perk, and it helps in compliance and routine,\u201d Di Edwardo said. <\/p>\n<p>She recommended a water aerobics class to work your muscles and aid in muscle-building, or checking out a community-based activity focused on light resistance challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nourish and hydrate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The way you feed your body matters, too. In this case, protein is particularly important. \u201cMake sure you are eating an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/how-much-protein-to-eat_l_63a22684e4b0aeb2ace83986\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"adequate amount of lean protein\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"63a22684e4b0aeb2ace83986\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"18\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adequate amount of lean protein<\/a> to support muscle growth and repair,\u201d Hougen said. <\/p>\n<p>Lean protein food sources include chicken, turkey, beef, pork and others.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget about adequate hydration, either. \u201cMuscles that are underhydrated can cause us to cramp or not recover quickly,\u201d Di Edwardo explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t go too hard or too fast.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Going slow with exercise changes is key \u2014 especially for women who have connective disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos. According to Dubinskaya, aggressive heavy lifting in particular can cause symptoms to flare up earlier and progress faster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/weightlifting-lower-risk-early-death_l_63459938e4b08e0e607d7966\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Weightlifting\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699f0f33e4b096b246376d0e\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"63459938e4b08e0e607d7966\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"19\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weightlifting<\/a> is good, but more is not always better,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Di Edwardo agreed. \u201cAs with all resistance training, know your limits,\u201d she said. \u201cAllow your muscles to take a break when needed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cgolden rule\u201d here, perhaps, is to push yourself, but not too hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMidlife health is not about extremes,\u201d Dubinskaya said. \u201cIt\u2019s about longevity.
