{"id":367146,"date":"2026-03-04T09:50:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T09:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/367146\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T09:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T09:50:12","slug":"taoiseachs-operation-septic-turkey-prompts-epic-levels-of-fury-on-opposition-benches-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/367146\/","title":{"rendered":"Taoiseach\u2019s Operation Septic Turkey prompts epic levels of fury on Opposition benches \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Why can\u2019t deputies be more like Edward Timmins?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Who\u2019s he?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The TD for Wicklow is already the Taoiseach\u2019s best boy in class for this week, even though it\u2019s early days and Edward isn\u2019t even a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Edward provided some welcome respite during a tough D\u00e1il session when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> was kicked around the chamber by speaker after speaker for not explicitly calling out the US for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/03\/03\/us-israeli-war-on-iran-enters-fourth-day-amid-mounting-death-toll-across-gulf\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/03\/03\/us-israeli-war-on-iran-enters-fourth-day-amid-mounting-death-toll-across-gulf\/\">starting a major war last Saturday<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite coming under heavy Opposition pressure to condemn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> for riding roughshod over international law when he ordered missile strikes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a>, the Taoiseach managed to stay on the right side of saying everything apart from openly denouncing the difficult man he is due to visit in the White House in a couple of weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Miche\u00e1l did this by repeating the phrases \u201crules-based international order\u201d and \u201cmultilateral rules-based order\u201d as many times as possible while criticising some of his critics for their reticence when it came to deploring the actions of other countries guilty of similar breaches and, in some cases, far worse transgressions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He stressed that he fully respected the rule of international law and would never condone those who would seek to subvert it. However, the vile atrocities committed in recent years by a murderous, despotic regime in Tehran cannot be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m a multilateralist,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mary-lou-mcdonald\/\">Mary Lou McDonald<\/a>. \u201cWe believe in a multilateral-based order, but we have to see reality too in terms of the full picture in this regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unfortunately there is \u201can absence of an international rules-based order now\u201d, which is why the world has gone mad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The order is out of order. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an ideal world, there would be an immediate \u201cde-escalation\u201d in the Middle East (not mentioning any names of who might be able to do this) and a return to the negotiating table. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nobody was disputing his condemnation of the monstrous regime in Iran. What opposition leaders wanted to know was why he didn\u2019t seem able to condemn the illegal military assault ordered by the US president at weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Not that Miche\u00e1l approves of this Operation Septic Turkey, or whatever it\u2019s called by whoever launched it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are issues, no questions, in terms of where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Mary Lou taking him to task for not condemning this \u201cbrazen\u201d breach of international law? He wasn\u2019t going to take that, not when her party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/02\/24\/sinn-fein-opposing-eu-loan-for-ukraine-like-supporting-surrender-says-micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/02\/24\/sinn-fein-opposing-eu-loan-for-ukraine-like-supporting-surrender-says-micheal-martin\/\">voted in the European Parliament against a \u20ac90 billion loan<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\">Ukraine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI know Sinn F\u00e9in doesn\u2019t support Ukraine,\u201d he declared, provoking epic fury from the Shinners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Had Europe denied Ukraine, a country illegally invaded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\">Russia<\/a>, it would be tantamount to telling its people \u201cto surrender now to the Russians\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> would be the happiest man in the world, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Then he fanned their epic fury (conveniently distracting himself from having to condemn the father of Operation Septic Turkey) by dragging in the Trump\u2019s political home guard, the Maga movement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s organisation in the US supported Maga Republican politicians over the decades through \u201cfinancial donations\u201d, he cheerfully announced to Mary Lou\u2019s apoplectic troops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\">Labour<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ivana-bacik\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ivana-bacik\">Ivana Bacik<\/a> wasn\u2019t so easily deflected, with Miche\u00e1l acknowledging that her party had always spoken out about repressive and violent regimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ivana knew what the Taoiseach was at. (As did all TDs in the D\u00e1il, as the St Patrick\u2019s Day trip to Washington loomed.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With two weeks to go to the annual shamrock ceremony in the White House, she correctly surmised that Miche\u00e1l wasn\u2019t going to say anything to upset Trump before their meeting in the Oval Office. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It must have stung when she reminded him that the prime minister of Spain had taken the US commander in chief to task for breaking international law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So Miche\u00e1l is skirting around the subject of Trump\u2019s illegal military assault, Ivana tartly concluded, before heading off shortly to \u201cgenuflect before the man responsible\u201d and \u201cengage in Plastic Paddy pageantry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/holly-cairns\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/holly-cairns\">Holly Cairns<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\">Social Democrats<\/a> wondered if the Government now believed that large countries could simply ignore international law. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t just apply to countries that we agree with.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While Trump\u2019s war was spreading in the Middle East, anybody listening to the Taoiseach talk about it \u201cwouldn\u2019t even know that the US is involved\u201d, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Of course, it\u2019s easy for the other leaders to say this. They\u2019re not heading Stateside at the end of next week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two hours into Tuesday\u2019s sitting, when almost every question he was asked was to do with the war, the Taoiseach finally hit the nail on the head after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-murphy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-murphy\/\">Paul Murphy<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/people-before-profit-solidarity-pbps\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/people-before-profit-solidarity-pbps\/\">Solidarity-People Before Profit<\/a> had a go. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWar is a terrible thing,\u201d he sighed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Well, yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Couldn\u2019t argue with him there. And when he is in Washington, he will be able to say that to Trump, who is unlikely to disagree. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And so to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\">Fine Gael<\/a> TD Edward Timmins. He spoke during the Order of Business in the D\u00e1il and didn\u2019t mention the war. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTaoiseach, I wish to raise the issue of spending control, cost control and improved outputs in various departments. This issue doesn\u2019t get enough of a hearing in this chamber,\u201d Edward said as the Taoiseach perked up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe should not assume spending increases should automatically match economic growth. Often when you spend more, you feed inefficiencies,\u201d he continued by way of improved outputs and justifiable spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Edward even had a question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur taxpayers fund this spending; who is speaking up for the taxpayer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Miche\u00e1l turned around to face his Coalition backbencher, beaming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDeputy, if there was a medal to be awarded for the best contributor of the week, you would be most deserving of it because you are a lone voice among many voices whose only inclination and focus is on spending more money, calling on Government to keep on spending more money and spend as much as we can. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou\u2019re the first person in a long time who has stood up and said that public expenditure in and of itself is not something that we should just knee-jerk or automatically applaud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Edward completely agreed with himself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt feeds inefficiencies\u201d he chimed-in, prompting Miche\u00e1l to wax lyrical on outputs, outcomes, value for money and how great it is to listen to somebody in the chamber supporting the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo I salute that and it\u2019s an awful pity the Minister for Public Expenditure didn\u2019t hear you because he would feel a bit less lonely in the overall scheme of things than he currently does in terms keeping a rein on public expenditure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI agree with you, like, that capital expenditure is an investment in the productive capacity of our economy&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Oh, but he could have talked all day about it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Without once having to think about avoiding any mention of the warmonger Trump and his septic turkey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Why can\u2019t deputies be more like Edward Timmins?
