Jessie Buckley<\/a> won over critics and moviegoers with her heart-wrenching performance in \u201cHamnet,\u201d but her comments in a three-month-old interview are receiving new scrutiny as awards season draws to a close. <\/p>\n

Appearing on the \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast<\/a> with her \u201cHamnet\u201d co-star Paul Mescal<\/a> in November, Buckley admitted she\u2019d made her husband, Freddie Sorensen, get rid of his two cats early in their relationship. <\/p>\n

\u201cCats are mean,\u201d she insisted. \u201cMy husband, when I started dating him, he had two cats … this is bad … One of the cats was, like, a pedigree model bitch. And she staged, like, a coup against me. I\u2019d come home, and there would just be, like, poo on my pillow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, Buckley gave Sorensen an ultimatum \u2015 which she joked may now get her \u201ccanceled.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI was like: \u2018It\u2019s me or the cats,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cBut I won! Sorry!\u201d <\/p>\n

Mescal appeared to support his co-star\u2019s actions, and quipped: \u201cFuck cats, honestly. Fuck \u2019em!\u201d <\/p>\n

A snippet of Buckley\u2019s remarks has drawn a plethora of amusing, if polarized, responses after being posted to Reddit<\/a> this week. Many argued that the Irish actor viewed pets as mere \u201caccessories\u201d and that telling a partner to get rid of their animals was akin to asking them \u201cto convert to a religion for you.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cGetting rid of your pets for someone is crazy. Asking someone to do that is even crazier,\u201d one person wrote. <\/p>\n

Added another: \u201cIf my soul mate asked me to get rid of my dog I\u2019d say \u2018guess you\u2019re not my soul mate after all\u2019 and kick them to the curb without a moment\u2019s thought.\u201d <\/p>\n

Others felt Buckley\u2019s stance would be justified if she had allergies or other serious concerns that would make pet ownership more difficult. <\/p>\n

Less-than-favorable takes on felines aside, Buckley is widely considered<\/a> the front-runner to win<\/a> the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of William Shakespeare\u2019s wife, Agnes (or Anne) Hathaway, in \u201cHamnet<\/a>.\u201d She\u2019s already received a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Actor Award for her performance. <\/p>\n
