{"id":369484,"date":"2026-03-05T16:42:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T16:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/369484\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T16:42:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T16:42:12","slug":"irishman-eoin-tonge-appointed-chief-executive-of-primark-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/369484\/","title":{"rendered":"Irishman Eoin Tonge appointed chief executive of Primark \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irishman Eoin Tonge has been appointed chief executive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/primark\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/primark\/\">Primark <\/a>\u2013 trading as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/penneys\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/penneys\/\">Penneys<\/a> in Ireland \u2013 having held the role on an interim basis for the past year following the resignation of Paul Marchant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Marchant resigned in March last year following an investigation into alleged inappropriate behaviour towards a woman. He had led the fashion retailer for 16 years and acknowledged his actions had \u201cfallen below the standards expected\u201d by the FTSE 100 company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Thursday, Primark confirmed the appointment of Tonge on a full-time basis, lauding his \u201csignificant strategic, commercial and financial experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tonge was appointed as a director of parent company Associated British Foods (ABF) in February 2023 and as group finance director three months later, having previously been at Marks and Spencer Group, where he was chief financial officer and chief strategy officer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The now 53-year-old, who holds a first-class honours degree in engineering from UCD, worked for US investment bank Goldman Sachs from 1994 to 2005, holding a variety of finance, treasury and capital market roles in London, Hong Kong and New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tonge then joined Irish sandwich-maker Greencore in early 2006 as group capital markets director with responsibility for treasury, investor relations and group communications.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>How the conflict in the Middle East is already affecting Irish consumers<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was promoted to group strategy and corporate development director three years later, and his steady rise continued in 2014 as he was made managing director of Greencore\u2019s grocery division in the UK. He was also a member of its executive board from its inception in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tonge was appointed chief financial officer of the convenience food producer in 2016, led at the time by Patrick Coveney, who described him then as having played a \u201ccritical role\u201d in shaping the group\u2019s strategy as well as having led the delivery of a number of acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He joined M&amp;S at a time of some turbulence for the storied British retailer, which had been shutting stores as its clothing business kept losing ground. Several key executives had departed and its shares had fallen 34 per cent over the previous 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tonge steadied the ship and also helped steer the group through the Covid-19 pandemic.
