Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling<\/a> have spent more than a decade carefully keeping their relationship out of the public eye\u2014making her surprise appearance alongside Gosling on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/a> Thursday night all the more unexpected.<\/p>\n

Gosling, who stopped by the NBC late-night show to promote his new film Project Hail Mary, revealed during his interview that it was Mendes\u2019 birthday before asking the audience\u2014which was filled with teachers\u2014if they\u2019d be willing to help him sing \u201cHappy Birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow here\u2019s the thing,\u201d Gosling joked. \u201cYou might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later, an apparently unsuspecting (and un-mic\u2019d) Mendes was escorted into the studio, drawing cheers from the crowd. She briefly addressed the audience to thank the teachers in attendance before the room broke into a rendition of \u201cHappy Birthday,\u201d accompanied by the North Bergen High School marching band and a blast of confetti.<\/p>\n

After the serenade, Mendes thanked the audience and planted a kiss on Gosling.<\/p>\n

The moment marked a rare public appearance together for the duo, who first met while filming the 2012 drama The Place Beyond the Pines. Despite their high-profile careers, the pair have kept their relationship\u2014and family life with their two daughters\u2014away from the spotlight, eschewing appearances together on red carpets at their film premieres or even the Oscars.<\/p>\n

The couple\u2019s Tonight Show appearance came just days before Gosling returns to Studio 8H<\/a> to host Saturday Night Live<\/a> this weekend, with musical guest Gorillaz.<\/p>\n
