{"id":371094,"date":"2026-03-06T14:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/371094\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T14:35:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:35:13","slug":"conform-architects-adds-perforated-floors-to-komorebi-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/371094\/","title":{"rendered":"ConForm Architects adds perforated floors to Komorebi house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Perforated metal floorplates allow sunlight to filter deep into the interiors of Komorebi, a terraced home in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a> renovated by local architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/conform-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ConForm Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named after the Japanese concept of Komorebi \u2013 the uplifting feeling of dappled sunlight filtering through leaves \u2013 the dwelling in Dulwich was updated to create a more interconnected layout for a father and his two sons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conformarchitects.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ConForm Architects<\/a> introduced new living spaces at the rear of the home, while creating a large void crossed by areas of perforated floor to help &#8220;amplify&#8221; an existing skylight at its centre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303098 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/komorebi-home-extension-conform-architects_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of Komorebi extension in London\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>ConForm Architects has renovated a terraced home in London<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us, this project was about moving away from static rooms to create a better-connected home,&#8221; the studio told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The real opportunity lay with an existing, unusual central rooflight. Instead of erasing it to gain floor space, we leaned into it, extending the void upwards to create a mechanism that draws daylight deep into the plan,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By using perforated steel floorplates and open voids, we allowed light to become both structure and atmosphere, filtering it through the home so the spaces feel alive and intrinsically connected rather than separated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303151 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/komorebi-home-extension-conform-architects_dezeen_2364_col_33-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"London home renovation by ConForm Architects\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Concrete-framed spaces were added to the rear<\/p>\n<p>The central daylit void of Komorebi separates the largely unchanged front of the home from a series of entirely new concrete-framed spaces at the rear, which the studio says &#8220;unfold in unexpected vertical and horizontal layers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the exposed concrete frame, the brickwork that lines this daylit void was given a finish of slurried, whitewashed mortar to enhance the feeling of light and space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303145 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/komorebi-home-extension-conform-architects_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Kitchen and dining space at Komorebi by ConForm Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A large void cyts through the interior<\/p>\n<p>On the ground floor, a newly opened-up axis passes through the central void to unite the dining, kitchen and living areas, with a lounge at the rear opening onto the garden through a large glass pivot door.<\/p>\n<p>Above, a first-floor bathroom and a study sit behind the home&#8217;s bedrooms, topped by an inverted-pitch roof and finished inside and out in pale brickwork.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/02\/17\/neiheiser-argyros-exeter-road-pavilion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/neiheiser-argyros-london-outhouse-extension_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"London house extension\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Neiheiser Argyros adds steel &#8220;cabinet of curiosities&#8221; to London outhouse\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An additional &#8220;pod room&#8221; next to the central rooflight on the second floor offers additional living space for the client&#8217;s teenage boys, ending in a large timber-framed window overlooking the garden and surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>A timber staircase with open treads alongside the home&#8217;s central void connects each level, with its landings also given perforated metal floors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303268 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/komorebi-home-extension-conform-architects_dezeen_2364_sq-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of London house\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Perforated floors filter dappled light<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We utilised the existing split-levels to our advantage, knitting these zones together vertically with open stair treads and voids,&#8221; was also added to the home<\/p>\n<p>ConForm Architects was founded in 2017 by Ben Edgley and Eoin O&#8217;Leary.<\/p>\n<p>Previous projects by the studio include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/01\/27\/conform-architects-terzetto-flat-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another extension in London that opens a flat up to its garden<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2021\/08\/22\/conform-architects-office-brutalist-smithson-tower\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a &#8220;homely&#8221;
