Actress Daryl Hannah has criticized how she’s been portrayed in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette in a bombshell new essay for The New York Times<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Hannah, 65 \u2014 who had a long-term relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., before he ultimately married Carolyn Bessette \u2014 has never publicly spoken about her romance with JFK’s son<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
“The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John,” she insisted in the piece<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Actress Daryl Hannah has forcefully condemned her portrayal in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette<\/a>.<\/p>\n Speaking out in a new scathing new essay written for The New York Times<\/a>, Hannah, 65 \u2014 who had a long-term relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a>, before he ultimately married Carolyn Bessette<\/a> \u2014 slammed the hit limited series, which is the first installment of\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/a>‘s\u00a0Love Story<\/a>\u00a0anthology<\/a>.<\/p>\n The nine-episode show depicts how JFK Jr. went from being in an on-again, off-again relationship with actress Hannah (played by Dree Hemingway) to\u00a0falling for up-and-coming Calvin Klein associate<\/a>\u00a0Bessette after they met through her prominent boss.<\/p>\n Credit: Stephen Rose\/Getty<\/p>\n Hannah \u2014\u00a0who has never spoken publicly about her romance with JFK’s son \u2014 wrote in The New York Times piece, \u201cThe character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John. The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue.\u201d<\/p>\n Daryl Hannah and JFK Jr. in 1994. She continued, “I have long believed that engaging with distortion often amplifies it. But a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me. The choice to present her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate was no accident.”<\/p>\n She went on to refute multiple moments depicted in the show, including a scene showing a cocaine-fueled party with her friends in which the drug has been placed on a priceless Kennedy family heirloom.<\/p>\n \u201cI have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties,” she wrote. “I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone\u2019s private memorial.”<\/p>\n John F. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis\u2019 death to a dog\u2019s. It\u2019s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. I chose not to battle them but to focus on my work and respect my loved ones by keeping my private life private. But my silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies.\u201d<\/p>\n A rep for Murphy didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for comment on Hannah’s essay.<\/p>\n Never miss a story \u2014 sign up for<\/strong> PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter<\/strong><\/a> to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer\u200b\u200b, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n Kennedy and Hannah first met in the early 1980s while vacationing with their families on the Caribbean island of St. Martin.<\/p>\n They then reconnected in 1988 while both attending the wedding of Kennedy\u2019s aunt,\u00a0Lee Radziwill<\/a>, to director Herb Ross \u2014 who had worked with Hannah on\u00a0Steel Magnolias.<\/p>\n The pair dated on and off for more than five years, before ending their relationship once and for all in 1994, despite speculation in the early \u201890s that they were ready to tie the knot.<\/p>\n Hannah told\u00a0Entertainment Weekly\u00a0back in 1993, \u201cIt\u2019s getting really annoying. I get asked about it all the time,\u201d adding, \u201cThis morning I call up my plumber, and even he asks me. Oh, brother, I\u2019m just trying to get my pipes fixed. Why can\u2019t people talk about something else?\u201d<\/p>\n During the couple\u2019s passionate romance, a neighbor in New York also told PEOPLE back in 1993 how she\u2019d seen Kennedy \u2014 tall, dark and shirtless in boxer shorts \u2014 dancing with a barefoot Hannah, who had been wearing a short nightgown at the time.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were doing this little love play,\u201d the onlooker previously said. \u201cHe was tickling her, and she\u2019d run away. Then he\u2019d catch her, and they\u2019d dance around. Even if you didn\u2019t know who they were, you\u2019d be entranced.”<\/p>\n Around two years after his split from Hannah, JFK Jr. married Bessett<\/a> with just 40 guests in attendance in a super-secret wedding ceremony.
