Starting with Iron Man 2, Don Cheadle has played James \u201cRhodey\u201d Rhodes\/War Machine in many Marvel projects, but in a different world, Terrence Howard<\/a> would still be in the role.<\/p>\n

Terrence Howard on Why He Was Dropped from Iron Man 2<\/p>\n

Howard played the character in Iron Man, but by the time the sequel rolled around, he was pushed out and recast with Cheadle. At the time, Howard said it came down to a salary dispute, with the actor refusing to accept a drastic pay cut<\/a>. However, while speaking recently on the PBD Podcast<\/a>, Howard offered up a different possibility, one which involves a confrontation with Hollywood producer Joel Silver.<\/p>\n

Several months before the release of Iron Man, Howard was starring alongside Jodie Foster in The Brave One, a vigilante action-thriller. While promoting the film at the Venice Film Festival, Howard expressed frustration that his name wasn\u2019t given the same credit treatment as Foster.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoel Silver came and had a conversation with me, and he\u2019s like, \u2018The reason your name isn\u2019t above the titles is because you\u2019re not the star of this thing \u2014 it\u2019s Jodie. And if you get nominated for an Oscar, it\u2019s going to be for Supporting Actor, not Best Actor,\u2019\u201d Howard said. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Thank you for telling me that, now I understand. But, you have to remember that I\u2019m a man just like you, and if you ever talk to me in that way again, I\u2019m going to knock your teeth out of your mouth.\u2019\u201c<\/p>\n

Silver happened to produce The Brave One alongside Susan Downey, the wife of Robert Downey Jr. \u201cEight months later, I lose Iron Man,\u201d Howard said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sure that all of those things played their part.\u201c<\/p>\n

Denzel Washington Helped Him<\/p>\n

Later in the interview, Howard said his \u201caggression\u201d and \u201cneed to be a man\u201d didn\u2019t do his career any favours. However, he had a conversation with Denzel Washington that changed his perspective. \u201cHe told me, \u2018Look at your hands, your fists are all balled up,\u2019\u201d Howard said. \u201c\u2018All of these producers are trying to open your hand so they can put money in it, but you won\u2019t do it; you keep your hands all tight. And you\u2019re blowing it.\u2019\u201c<\/p>\n
