Ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nact.jp\/english\/exhibition_special\/2026\/shojomanga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shojo Manga Infinity: Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi, and Waki Yamato<\/a> at the National Art Center, Tokyo, next autumn, it is an opportune moment to consider how Japanese popular culture shapes the global visual imagination.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"xts-rich-text__body-m\">\nA natural starting point is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/en\/search?entry=osamu%20tezuka&amp;page=1&amp;sortby=relevance&amp;tab=sold_lots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Osamu Tezuka<\/a>, the godfather of manga. Best known as the creator of Astro Boy \u2014 which he adapted into the first broadcast television anime \u2014 Tezuka also pioneered early sh\u014djo manga with Princess Knight, a work that influenced later global successes by other authors, such as Sailor Moon and The Rose of Versailles. This original ink and watercolor on paper was created as an opening illustration for the Princess Knight series, and was later published in a 1953 issue of\u202fSh\u014djo Club (Girls\u2019 Club).
