James quotes former Ireland captain Brian O\u2019Driscoll, who was part of ITV\u2019s commentary team. \u201cI suppose if you\u2019re Welsh and you\u2019re looking at this, you\u2019d certainly think there\u2019s cause for the TMO to interject.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2026\/03\/06\/irelands-defence-as-much-as-attack-secures-a-hard-fought-win-over-wales\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland show resolve in defence and attack to secure hard-fought win over WalesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s Kelleher\u2019s line that he runs and the defender he takes out. Is he potentially in front of Jack Conan, who carries the ball? He just gets himself in there. I don\u2019t know if Eddie James (Wales centre) is going to make the collision, but he certainly isn\u2019t helped by being taken out by Kelleher. The referee says he\u2019s level. If you\u2019re Irish, he\u2019s level. If you\u2019re Welsh, you maybe say he\u2019s in front.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former Wales outhalf Dan Biggar concurred: \u201cThe frustrating thing is the TMO has had a chance to look at it, and it probably wasn\u2019t absolutely conclusive. If you\u2019ve got a red jersey, it\u2019s in front, and if you\u2019re in a green jersey, it\u2019s level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Welsh fans were also critical of a missed forward pass in the build-up to Ireland\u2019s bonus-point try scored by Jamie Osborne and the yellow card received by Wales scrumhalf Tomos Williams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rugby correspondent Steffan Thomas celebrated the remarkable achievement of Wales flanker Alex Mann, who broke a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/six-nations\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/six-nations\/\">Six Nations<\/a> record for thmost tackles in a match, 32, eclipsing the previous mark held jointly by another Welshman, Luke Charteris, and former France hooker Guilhem Guirado. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Ireland's Garry Ringrose is tackled by Wales' Alex Mann. If Wales are to end a Six Nations drought of 1,099 days without a victory in a championship they once dominated, then Alex Mann will be at the centre of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was an overwhelming sense of pride in the way in which Wales competed, with former players Jamie Roberts, Biggar and Jonathan Davies all delighted by the performance. The latter told S4C: \u201cIt\u2019s a huge game next week against Italy, if we can come here and deliver a match like that there\u2019s hope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat was the best game Wales has played so far. In their record away win over England, Ireland ruthlessly built up a 22-0 lead before the hosts replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOn Friday, though, a hard-hitting Welsh defence stopped the hosts from building an insurmountable advantage.
