{"id":374191,"date":"2026-03-08T11:15:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T11:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/374191\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T11:15:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T11:15:17","slug":"schemata-architects-designs-le-labo-store-to-reflect-tokyo-setting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/374191\/","title":{"rendered":"Schemata Architects designs Le Labo store to reflect Tokyo setting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/schemata-architecture-office\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schemata Architects<\/a> has renovated a store in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/tokyo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tokyo<\/a> for perfumery brand Le Labo, featuring shelves and furniture made from the same wood used to cast the textured concrete walls.<\/p>\n<p>The store in Tokyo&#8217;s Daikanyama neighbourhood was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelabofragrances.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le Labo<\/a>&#8216;s first location outside of the US, but after 18 years in operation it required a thorough redesign.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302981 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/le-labo-schemata-architects-perfume-store-tokyo-japan_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Le Labo, Tokyo\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Schemata Architects renovated this store in Tokyo for perfumery brand Le Labo<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/schemata.jp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schemata Architects<\/a>, which previously transformed a traditional wooden townhouse in Kyoto into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/09\/23\/schemata-architects-le-labo-flagship-kyoto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a store for the brand<\/a>, was tasked with developing a design that would complement the urban streetscape.<\/p>\n<p>The store&#8217;s interior layout was altered to highlight the craft of perfume making, with a fragrance lab moved from the rear to the front so it becomes visible from the street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302983 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/le-labo-schemata-architects-perfume-store-tokyo-japan_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Le Labo by Schemata Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The studio was tasked with developing a design that complements the urban streetscape<\/p>\n<p>Perfumers at work can be seen through the windows that line the entire elevation, providing an intriguing welcome as customers approach the store.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the client&#8217;s suggestion, a palette combining industrial and natural materials was chosen to echo the building&#8217;s reinforced concrete structure, while introducing warmth and character to the space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302984 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/le-labo-schemata-architects-perfume-store-tokyo-japan_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Furniture by Schemata Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The store has a palette that combines industrial and natural materials\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Le Labo proposed wood and concrete as materials,&#8221; the architects explained, &#8220;suggesting that the city&#8217;s defining characteristic lies in the blending of opposing forces: intense energy and profound tranquillity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The building is constructed using two types of reinforced concrete, with the external architectural surfaces displaying a smooth finish, while the more robust structural elements were intended to be hidden behind other materials.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302985 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/le-labo-schemata-architects-perfume-store-tokyo-japan_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Raw-textured ceiling\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The existing ceiling was stripped back to reveal original lighting recesses<\/p>\n<p>Schemata Architects appreciated the textural detail left behind by the wooden formwork and chose to replicate this surface finish throughout the store.<\/p>\n<p>New interventions were created using formwork made from red cedar treated with uzukuri \u2013 a traditional woodworking technique that involves rubbing away softer early wood to allow the hard grain to stand out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302986 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/le-labo-schemata-architects-perfume-store-tokyo-japan_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"In-store laboratory\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The store&#8217;s interior layout was altered to highlight the craft of perfume making<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By pouring concrete into formwork that emphasised the wood grain&#8217;s uneven texture, we produced precast panels where the grain was transferred onto the surface, which we then employed as walls,&#8221; the architects pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>Following the construction of the shop&#8217;s walls, the wooden formwork was repurposed as display shelving and other furniture items that help to create a sense of cohesion between the surfaces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2302988 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/le-labo-schemata-architects-perfume-store-tokyo-japan_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Concrete interior of Le Labo, Tokyo\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Traces of the space&#8217;s construction create a sense of consistency<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We designed this relationship between formwork wood and concrete \u2013 elements reflecting Tokyo \u2013 to form a contrast through the grain texture,&#8221;
