{"id":374974,"date":"2026-03-08T23:40:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T23:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/374974\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T23:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T23:40:08","slug":"presidents-condemnation-of-iran-war-violations-puts-pressure-on-taoiseach-before-us-trip-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/374974\/","title":{"rendered":"President\u2019s condemnation of Iran war \u2018violations\u2019 puts pressure on Taoiseach before US trip \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Comments on violence in the Middle East by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> are expected to increase pressure on the Government in advance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/st-patricks-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/st-patricks-day\/\">St Patrick\u2019s Day<\/a> visit by Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> to the Oval Office in Washington, DC. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-women-s-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-women-s-day\/\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> on Sunday, Connolly warned that \u201ccatastrophic consequences of violating the UN charter\u201d could not be ignored, saying \u201cthe violations of international law we are witnessing are shocking and numbing\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While she did not name the United States or Israel explicitly, she said what was being witnessed in the Middle East and beyond were not \u201cpolitical disputes\u201d but rather were \u201cdeliberate assaults on international law\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Connolly did not directly criticise the Government but said \u201cwe cannot afford inaction\u201d and that assaults on international law must be named as such \u201cwithout euphemism and without equivocation\u201d, adding that \u201cIreland is uniquely positioned to do precisely that\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While sources in \u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in strongly denied the statement was designed to put pressure on the Government, several Government figures said on Sunday that they believed it would prove awkward and could be raised during exchanges on the Taoiseach\u2019s US visit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her comments were welcomed by Labour, People Before Profit, Sinn F\u00e9in and the Social Democrats, who have been calling on the Taoiseach to raise the matter in the White House. Connolly pointed to the State\u2019s peacekeeping history, commitment to disarmament and Ireland\u2019s history of colonisation, famine and conflict resolution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government has not condemned the bombing of Iran as a breach of international law, with political calls for Martin to raise the issue with US president Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bombardments continued in Iran, Israel, Lebanon and the wider region over the weekend as the conflict entered its second week. Strikes on fuel depots in Tehran left the capital, with its peacetime population of almost 10 million, under dense, dark clouds on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Sunday evening, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed by an Israeli missile strike on February 28th, was chosen as Iran\u2019s new supreme leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/03\/07\/more-than-100-attend-dublin-event-celebrating-death-of-irans-ayatollah-ali-khamenei\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More than 100 people attend Dublin event celebrating death of Iran\u2019s Ayatollah Ali KhameneiOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He becomes the third supreme leader of the Islamic republic after his father, who ruled for 37 years until his death at the outset of the current war, and Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the revolution in 1979. He is considered to be a hardliner with close ties to Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US president Donald Trump warned in an interview with ABC News that whoever is selected as the next supreme leader \u201cis not going to last long\u201d without the approval of the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, water desalination plants in Iran and in the Gulf have come under fire. Some states in the region depend almost entirely on desalination for drinking water. Iran\u2019s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said a strike on a facility in Bahrain came only after the US had hit an Iranian desalination plant on Qeshm island, affecting the water supply for 30 villages. \u201cThe US set this precedent, not Iran,\u201d he said on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US military confirmed a seventh member of its armed forces had been killed. The wider death toll in the conflict is unclear, but hundreds or more have been killed in Iran and Lebanon, while two Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon. Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee has asked her department to assess the need for a further Government charter flight out of the region, including whether it would depart again from Oman or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gas prices have risen dramatically since the intense air campaign began more than a week ago.
