{"id":375644,"date":"2026-03-09T09:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T09:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/375644\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T09:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T09:47:12","slug":"weaponise-eu-market-against-china-or-face-manufacturing-collapse-official-think-tank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/375644\/","title":{"rendered":"Weaponise EU market against China or face manufacturing collapse: official think tank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The European Union has been urged to weaponise its giant market to draw concessions from China, whose economic fragility is making it increasingly reliant on rich export markets.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A new report from the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), the EU\u2019s official think tank, said \u201cChina\u2019s weakness creates opportunities\u201d for the bloc to use its chokepoints and leverage to bring Beijing to the negotiating table in a credible way.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">With the United States rapidly narrowing for Chinese buyers and sellers, Europe remains the last reasonably open advanced market where they can buy vital technology and sell industrial and hi-tech goods.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The researchers \u2013 who are funded by the EU but have full intellectual autonomy \u2013 said Europe had been too slow to realise how much leverage this reality bestowed, partly because it overestimated China\u2019s economic strength.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Instead, the EUISS suggested, Beijing\u2019s more assertive international posture was driven by insecurities at home.<\/p>\n<p>As China weaponised its dominance on <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/rare-earths?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rare earths<\/a> and other critical minerals over recent years, Europe did nothing.
