Since 2022, the county has been combating this crisis by installing naloxone boxes throughout the community. So, how effective is the naloxone program?

Last year, we reported that 35,000 Narcan kits had been given out. The county provided updated data on the kits and the progress of the program. Each Nalox-box holds about 12 naloxone, or Narcan, kits designed to reverse the effects of a drug overdose. Since the program began four years ago, Monroe County has distributed nearly 50,000 kits.

Currently, there are 651 boxes available to the public, all pinpointed on a map with a feature that allows users to quickly find the three closest boxes. Last year, the county health department distributed more than 45,000 Narcan kits, with 17,000 of them through the Nalox-boxes. County employees stock these boxes with thousands of kits each month, and frequently used boxes are restocked weekly.

These kits are free and anonymous to use, making it difficult to determine exactly how many lives have been saved. However, data from the medical examiner’s office shows a 43% decrease in overdose deaths in Monroe County from 2023 to 2024, one year after the boxes became available.

Efforts to combat drug overdoses are taking another step forward. Monroe County’s addiction services team is now offering fentanyl and xylazine test strips in Narcan boxes throughout the area. The test strips are not inside the outdoor boxes due to temperature restrictions.

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, there are resources available. You can contact the Monroe County Addiction Services hotline at 753-5300. New York State also offers a toll-free hopeline at 877-846-7369. UR Medicine and Rochester Regional Health have recovery programs as well.

If you have a question you’d like answered, send an email to goodquestion@whec.com.

For Related Stories: overdoses Narcan Naloxone box program Good Question Monroe County

Updates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports…

[274
18,90828,135,19,17,462,173942,173941,12029,173940
post-378024","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-medication","tag-eire","tag-good-question","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-medication","tag-monroe-county","tag-naloxone-box-program","tag-narcan","tag-overdoses
["GET
