\n\tMisty Copeland is speaking out after Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a> claimed that \u201cno one cares about\u201d ballet and opera.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe retired American Ballet Theatre dancer addressed the Marty Supreme<\/a> actor, whose recent comments on the art forms sparked controversy<\/a>, while speaking on a panel<\/a> on March 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFirst I have to say that it\u2019s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form,\u201d Copeland said, referencing a November 2025 collaborative Instagram post<\/a>.\u00a0The social media promotion, which was shared by both Copeland and the Marty Supreme Instagram account, included a photo of Copeland wearing a Marty Supreme windbreaker and a photo of her dancing ballet as a child.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut I think that it\u2019s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that\u2019s not \u2018popular\u2019 and a part of pop culture as movies are,\u201d she said at the at the launch of Aveeno and TOGETHXR\u2019s The Strength Issue in New York. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t have enduring relevance in culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCopeland, who a decade ago became the first Black principal ballerina in ABT\u2019s history, explained that it is \u201coften mistaken when something is popular that it\u2019s meaningful or more impactful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years,\u201d she said, adding that \u201caccess and opportunity\u201d can \u201cchange your life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s the work that I\u2019ve been doing my whole career is to bring more people into it,\u201d Copeland shared. \u201cSo that people do understand the importance and the relevance of it in our communities and our culture, and you see it reflected everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI mean, he wouldn\u2019t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren\u2019t for opera and ballet and their relevance in that medium,\u201d the ballerina said about Chalamet. \u201cSo all of these mediums have a space and we shouldn\u2019t be comparing them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBoth Copeland and Chalamet are both expected to attend the 2026 Oscars on Sunday, March 15. Copeland is scheduled to appear<\/a> during a performance of Sinners\u2018 Oscar-nominated original song \u201cI Lied to You\u201d led by Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq. Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey, Alice Smith, Eric Gales, Brittany Howard, Christone \u201cKingfish\u201d Ingram and Sinners actresses Jayme Lawson and Li Jun Li will also be making an appearance during the segment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tChalamet is nominated for best actor for his performance in Marty Supreme. His fellow nominees include Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).\u00a0<\/p>\n
