\n\tAlex Warren<\/a> was one of several best new artist nominees to take part in a live medley at the Grammys<\/a> this year \u2014 but the experience was sadly diminished after technical issues threw off his performance of Billboard Hot 100<\/a> topper \u201cOrdinary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an upcoming interview on Call Her Daddy, the TikToker opened up for the first time in depth about what led up to the mishap. \u201cI\u2019ve never talked about this,\u201d he begins in an exclusive clip shared with Billboard on Tuesday (March 10).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was horrifying,\u201d Warren continues in conversation with host Alex Cooper. \u201cWe had rehearsed it all week \u2026 it was perfect. To this day I don\u2019t know exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs far as the musician remembers, \u201cEverything cut out\u201d from his in-ear monitors mere moments before he was supposed to perform in between fellow nominees Leon Thomas and Lola Young. \u201cThey\u2019re like, \u201930 seconds.\u2019 I said, \u2018I can\u2019t hear anything, I can\u2019t hear myself,’\u201d Warren tells Cooper in the clip. \u201cThe guy\u2019s like, \u2018It\u2019s live TV. Twenty-five seconds.\u2019 I go, \u2018Guys, something\u2019s wrong.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUltimately, there was nothing the crew could do to fix the problem before Warren stepped out in front of the crowd at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles \u2014 and so he had no choice but to accept his fate. \u201cIn my head, I look up at the sky, and I go, \u2018This is meant to happen,’\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I just go, \u2018Let\u2019s do it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the Feb. 1 ceremony, KATSEYE, Olivia Dean, Addison Rae, sombr and The Mar\u00edas were also all involved in the best new artist medley<\/a>, which preceded Dean taking home the prize. When it was Warren\u2019s turn to sing during the segment, cameras followed him as he began at a popcorn stand in the venue\u2019s concession area before walking out to greet the audience. As he took the stage, he visibly and audibly struggled to find his place in the song over the accompaniment, eventually recovering by removing his earpiece. <\/p>\n

\n\tLater, Warren addressed<\/a> the issue by posting a video of himself listening to the distorted, delayed audio track he\u2019d been mistakenly fed through his in-ears on Instagram. \u201cWhen you\u2019re performing at the Grammys and all you hear is this in your ears,\u201d he wrote at the time. \u201cThis would only happen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
