The Duchess has published an incredible 67 books since she first put pen to paper in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>And, today, (September 1) marks a special anniversary for the Duchess as it marks the 36th anniversary since her first book, Budgie the Little Helicopter, was published. The series contains seven books and was also the inspiration for an animated children&#8217;s television show in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Budgie the Little Helicopter, Sarah has <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/royal\/1800046\/princess-beatrice-royal-tradition-sienna\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">written in-depth about Queen Victoria<\/a> and published other children&#8217;s books in both the Little Red and the Genie Gems series.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she has been a published author since the first of the Budgie the Little Helicopter books were published, the Duchess has opened up about becoming a best-selling novelist in her sixties.<\/p>\n<p>Largely inspired by her own rich family history, Sarah penned three romantic novels, Her Heart For a Compass, A Most Intriguing Lady and A Woman of Intrigue, which became instant <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sarahferguson15\/p\/CqpmxVYKYli\/?cr=1&amp;v=12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday Times bestsellers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">Speaking of the success, the Duchess told <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheknows.com\/entertainment\/articles\/2748583\/duchess-of-york-sarah-ferguson-becoming-a-novelist\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SheKnows:<\/a> \u201cYou start your career at 61, then you go to say, \u2018Oh, I could write a novel,\u2019 then you ask for help to write the novel, and then when you get to 63, you\u2019ve already done the Sunday Times bestseller list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8220;It\u2019s pretty exciting to talk from a place of inspiration of starting a new career at 63. You\u2019re never too old.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Duchess went on to explain how she discovered herself in the process of putting pen to paper. \u201cPeople say you escape into the novel,\u201d she explains. \u201cWell, I am escaping out of myself; of the self-doubt, out of the self-judgment, of the self-sabotage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Explaining that she finally knows who she is, she explains: \u201cI\u2019m a novelist and I\u2019m an author,\u201d she says, \u201cI write historical romances with a twist of super sleuthness \u2013 super sexy, sassy, super sleuthness. And what else? Oh, yes, and also saucy.
