{"id":38044,"date":"2025-09-02T06:25:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/38044\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T06:25:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:25:12","slug":"teen-campaigner-cara-darmody-says-tanaiste-is-committed-to-timely-assessment-of-needs-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/38044\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen campaigner Cara Darmody says T\u00e1naiste is committed to timely assessment of needs \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Disability rights campaigner Cara Darmody has been assured the Government is fully committed to assessing the needs of all autistic children within six months, as per its obligations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 14-year-old from Co Tipperary met <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hildegarde-naughton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hildegarde-naughton\/\">Minister of State for Disabilities Hildegarde Naughton<\/a> in Government Buildings on Monday to highlight delays in assessing children with disabilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some 17,000 children are waiting for assessment. The Disability Act provides that the HSE must complete an assessment of need within six months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Darmody has two younger brothers, Neil (12) and John (7), both of whom are autistic and have intellectual disabilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking after her meeting with Mr Harris, Ms Darmody said he told her additional finance would be provided in the budget for \u201cCara\u2019s fund\u201d, a mechanism set up to clear the backlog. A \u20ac10 million sum has been allocated, but she said this is \u201conly a drop in the ocean\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe said the right to an assessment of need will remain and that they\u2019re not going to change or interfere with the six-month time limit,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s a big positive, because that was one of the things I was asking for in this meeting,\u201d said Ms Darmody. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Harris posted on social media that he was pleased to have met Ms Darmody, who he described as an \u201cincredible 14-year-old who advocates with such passion, clarity and decency for improvements to our assessment of needs system in Ireland and access to therapies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have gone through a good list of issues to work on together,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Before the meeting, Ms Darmody met Opposition leaders at Leinster House. She said she did not doubt the T\u00e1naiste\u2019s sincerity but said he will have to choose whether he wants to be the hero or the villain on this question. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2025\/05\/20\/im-determined-to-fix-this-disability-rights-activist-cara-darmody-starts-50-hour-leinster-house-picket\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018I\u2019m determined to fix this\u2019: Disability rights activist Cara Darmody starts 50-hour Leinster House picketOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUnfortunately, it\u2019s looking like he\u2019s going to be the villain right now, but I strongly believe that he can come back,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sinn F\u00e9in leader Mary Lou McDonald said Ms Darmody has proven herself to be a formidable campaigner. \u201cShe\u2019s standing for her own two brothers who have been failed, but also for the thousands of children and young people who have been left in the lurch. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe right to access assessment of needs within the six-month statutory time frame has to be respected.
