{"id":382089,"date":"2026-03-12T22:40:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/382089\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T22:40:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:40:07","slug":"calls-for-safety-audit-on-busy-limerick-road-amid-reports-of-cars-overturning-into-dykes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/382089\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls for safety audit on busy Limerick road amid reports of cars overturning into dykes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"134\" data-end=\"295\">SAFETY concerns have been raised regarding a busy stretch of the R522 between Castlemahon Cross and Danganbeg in west Limerick amid reports of cars frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/131\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">overturning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"297\" data-end=\"495\">Independent councillor Jerome Scanlan tabled a motion at the March meeting of the Newcastle West Municipal District calling for a safety review of traffic and travel conditions on the road.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"871\">He said he was requesting a traffic flow audit for this stretch, saying road safety is a \u201cmassive issue&#8221; for the area.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"871\"><strong>Read next:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/motoring-news\/2023664\/hopes-high-that-new-car-share-service-to-be-rolled-out-in-limerick-city-centre-by-easter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hopes high that new car-share service to be rolled out in Limerick city centre by Easter<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"871\">Cllr Scanlan acknowledged that the local authority cannot fill in every roadside dyke as \u201cthat would cost a fortune,\u201d but asked if there is anything that can be done to make the road safer for motorists. \u201cLoads of cars overturn into the dykes,\u201d he said in reference to the specific section of the road.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"1086\">The district cathaoirleach, Cllr Michael Collins, seconded the motion but urged caution.\u00a0 He said local councillors \u201cget these requests for every regional road\u201d, asking: \u201cWhere do you stop and where do you start?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"1086\">Cllr Scanlan explained that he was recently driving on the R522 when a car overtook him that \u201chad to be doing at least 130 kilometres,\u201d 50 kilometres over the road\u2019s 80 kilometre-per-hour speed limit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"76\" data-end=\"443\">Councillors, including Cllr Scanlan, questioned whether mobile speed cameras could be implemented along the road, saying this \u201cwould help\u201d stop cars from exceeding the speed limit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"76\" data-end=\"443\">They were told, however, that this is an issue for An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na and is not the responsibility of the MD.
