Celebrities are bravely coming out as fans of the opera and ballet in reaction to Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/timothee-chalamet-ballet-opera-backlash.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">negging of those art forms<\/a>. Chalamet was cutting it up with Matthew McConaughey for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=424w9fJRgYk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety\/CNN<\/a> last month when he denigrated them as dying and less than vital to the culture. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, keep this thing alive,\u2019 even though no one cares about this anymore,\u201d Chalamet said. \u201cAll respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.\u201d The 14 cents thing was unnecessary, dude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnolgdi000z3b7ck30l8axs@published\" data-word-count=\"72\">Opera and ballet pros like Andrea Bocelli and Misty Copeland apparently feel they did not get \u201call respect\u201d from Timmy. And fans of the lively arts as diverse as Doja Cat and Nathan Lane have criticized Chalamet for his remarks. You know things are bad when the main people in your corner are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/david-marcus-timothee-chalamets-right-left-ruined-ballet-opera\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News<\/a> pundits and Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n. Below, all the celebrities going \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TJI_gygXsfs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kill da Wabbit<\/a>\u201d mode on Timmy Tim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnp22q1003e3b7c6iljdsi0@published\" data-word-count=\"125\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/nathan-lane-slams-matthew-mcconaughey-timothee-chalamet-11924711\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The View<\/a>, Lane weighed in on the Timoth\u00e9e controvers\u00e9e. \u201cOh, what a schmuck,\u201d Lane said. \u201cIt was kind of kaleidoscopic in its stupidity and insensitivity, and yet strangely telling about where we are in this country.\u201d Lane added that operas and ballets, so far, have a longer shelf life than A24. \u201cFirst of all, one should remember, people will be going to see Swan Lake and La Traviata long after someone at a dinner party says, \u2018Who was Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the show business circle of life.\u201d Lion King reference, I get it. Lane also noted: \u201cWhy was there a town hall meeting\u201d with McConaughey and Chalamet? And why was this \u201cmeeting of the minds\u201d necessary? Now why is McConaughey catching strays?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnozelz002e3b7cqsxjvnqp@published\" data-word-count=\"60\">Lane\u2019s remarks were not the first time The View looked at this situation. It brought up that Chalamet\u2019s mother, sister, and grandmother were all professional ballet dancers at one point or another. \u201cYou come from a dance family, so when you crap on somebody else\u2019s art form, it doesn\u2019t feel good,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/the-view-slams-timothee-chalamet-anti-opera-comments-11922004\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Whoopi Goldberg said<\/a>. Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/sheryl-lee-ralph-timothee-chalamet-mad-at-mother-ballet-comments-11923722\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">People<\/a> at the Time Woman of the Year gala, Sheryl Lee Ralph read the situation as a moment of acting out, rather than deeply held anti-ballet beliefs. \u201cI think when young Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet spoke about ballet and all of that, he was just mad at his mother that day,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was just mad at his sister that day. He was just mad at his aunt that day. He didn\u2019t mean what he says, because I know that boy has loved a few ballerinas. In her Instagram Story, Gasc\u00f3n imagined a phone conversation between her and Timmy: \u201cHey Karla, do u think they gonna make me pass the red carpet at the Oscars?\u201d she imagines Chalamet asking. \u201cAre you a trans woman? Then don\u2019t worry about it, Tim,\u201d she would reply. Gasc\u00f3n went on to sort of defend ballet and opera by saying she loves ballet slippers and has seen The Phantom of the Opera (a musical) ten times. Noted!<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnpmqku00433b7cdsinq1ii@published\" data-word-count=\"114\">A movie star saying opera and ballet are dying is the pot calling the kettle black, in Juliette Binoche\u2019s eyes. At the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, Binoche said, \u201cI thought cinema was a dying art.\u201d Which seems like the anxiety Chalamet was trying to express with his needless opera bashing. Binoche then chastised all of us for caring about this. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what he\u2019s saying. It doesn\u2019t matter. Don\u2019t make it big,\u201d she said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/andrea-bocelli-timothee-chalamet-opera-ballet-1236685276\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a>. \u201cWhat nourishes your heart and soul is what is important. You can watch a lot of films that are empty and make you dry at the end. What counts is what is nourishing your soul and life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnps6mx004k3b7cywx2j3bc@published\" data-word-count=\"115\">Opera star\/Simpsons guest star Andrew Bocelli was \u201csurprised\u201d to hear \u201cfellow artist\u201d Chalamet slamming his business. Speaking to People, Bocelli assumed Chalamet has little experience with opera and ballet. \u201cI believe we often tend to keep our distance from what we have not yet truly encountered. Opera and ballet are art forms that have crossed centuries and continue to speak to the human heart, because they answer a deep need for beauty, truth, and emotion,\u201d Bocelli said. \u201cThey are not arts of the past, but living languages that can still move us, make us reflect, and bring different generations together.\u201d As Ralph noted, when it comes to ballet, distance from the art isn\u2019t the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnpw9ui004q3b7cy59i5kz9@published\" data-word-count=\"171\">If my art is so dead, then why did you want it on the Marty Supreme press tour, Timmy Tim? That\u2019s the gist of Misty Copeland\u2019s reaction to the Chalamet ballet slam. \u201cFirst, I have to say that it\u2019s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form,\u201d she said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/global\/misty-copeland-timothee-chalamet-actor-ballet-opera-1236684380\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a>. Copeland was one of many stars to get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/marty-supreme-jacket-celebs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coveted Marty Supreme jacket<\/a>, alongside Kendall Jenner and Tom Brady. \u201cI think that it\u2019s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that\u2019s not \u2018popular\u2019 and a part of pop culture as movies are, but that doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t have enduring relevance in culture,\u201d Copeland added. \u201c[Chalamet] wouldn\u2019t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren\u2019t for opera and ballet and their relevance in that medium. So all of these mediums have a space and we shouldn\u2019t be comparing them.\u201d But will she return the jacket?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmnq1atn004y3b7cbhbv2lbp@published\" data-word-count=\"200\">In classic Doja Cat fashion, the rapper got into it (yuh), then got out of it (nuh). Doja Cat posted and then deleted a TikTok slamming Chalamet for his art-shaming behavior. \u201cHey, by the way, opera is 400 years old, ballet is 500 years old,\u201d she said. \u201cSomebody named Tim-oh-tay Cha-lam-et had the nerve \u2014 big guy, by the way \u2014 had the nerve to say, on-camera, that nobody cares about it.\u201d She then backtracked, saying she posted \u201cin the heat of the moment\u201d and, actually, she\u2019s never seen an opera or ballet. \u201cI am going to come out and say that I know nothing about opera. I know nothing about ballet. I\u2019ve never been to a ballet. I\u2019ve never seen an opera,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat I was doing yesterday was virtue signaling, because I wanted to connect. And I knew that Timoth\u00e9e\u2019s goof-up was something that I could leverage in order for people to connect with me and fuck with me.\u201d Congrats on doing the shadow work to know when you\u2019re being disingenuous, Doja Cat.
