{"id":383303,"date":"2026-03-13T15:10:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/383303\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T15:10:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:10:10","slug":"glasshouse-theatre-operates-as-finely-tuned-musical-instrument","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/383303\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasshouse Theatre operates as &#8220;finely tuned musical instrument&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An undulating glass facade encloses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cantilevers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cantilevered<\/a> first floor of the Glasshouse Theatre in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/queensland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a>, designed by Australian studio Blight Rayner Architecture with international firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/snohetta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Created as an extension of the brutalist Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane, the 1,500-seat venue has a flexible auditorium designed to accommodate everything from dance performances to symphony orchestras.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305380 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Glasshouse Theatre by Blight Rayner Architecture and Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Glasshouse Theatre has been completed in Queensland<\/p>\n<p>Its defining feature is its overhanging first floor, which <a href=\"https:\/\/blightrayner.com.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blight Rayner Architecture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snohetta.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a> wrapped in a rippling glass facade that allows views in and out of the foyer behind it.<\/p>\n<p>The six-metre cantilever spans two street frontages, maximising the usable space on its inner-city site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305378 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773414608_301_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Undulating glass facade\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It has a cantilevered first floor with a rippling facade<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, the facade is a nod to a prose poem by Murri artist and Gangulu woman Lilla Watson, which refers to the rippling water of the Brisbane River and fish swimming beneath its surface.<\/p>\n<p>Its design was also intended to minimise the theatre&#8217;s visual mass while maximising light and character in the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>Manufactured by Austrian company <a href=\"https:\/\/seele.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seele<\/a> \u2013 the same company behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/09\/26\/apple-fifith-avenue-foster-partners-new-york\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the iconic 5th Avenue Apple retail store in New York<\/a> \u2013 it comprises two tiers of unique seven-metre-high glass panels. Some of these have black ceramic inlays to help minimise solar glare and heat gain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305384 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773414609_914_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Glasshouse Theatre by Blight Rayner Architecture and Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The rippling facade encloses the foyer<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thought to make the transparent facade a setting for a kind of public theatre where people in the foyers would be seen variously clear and blurred from the street,&#8221; said Blight Rayner Architecture director Michael Rayner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And we wanted to embed the beginnings of First Nations narratives related to the context into the design.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305386 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773414609_81_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Theatre foyer\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1396\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The foyer is designed to feel bright and airy<\/p>\n<p>Blight Rayner Architecture and Sn\u00f8hetta won the international competition for the project in 2019. According to the team, it makes QPAC &#8220;the largest performing arts centre under one roof&#8221; in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, its auditorium comprises two stalls with 1,000 seats, and a balcony level with a further 500 seats. The distance from the stage to the furthest seat in the theatre is 28 metres, ensuring &#8220;the atmosphere is incredibly intimate for both patrons and performers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305383 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773414609_431_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Glasshouse Theatre by Blight Rayner Architecture and Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The auditorium has a contrasting dark interior<\/p>\n<p>Glasshouse Theatre&#8217;s auditorium has a dark interior, finished with grey ironbark walls and deep green carpet, which is a deliberate contrast to the bright and airy foyer.<\/p>\n<p>It is highly adaptable, ensuring it can easily accommodate a wide range of performances. A key feature is an orchestra pit with three floor sections that can be raised or lowered independently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773414610_263_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Wood-lined auditorium\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1091\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It is intended to feel &#8220;incredibly intimate&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The theatre was designed to operate like a finely tuned musical instrument \u2013 adjustable to support world-class opera, ballet, dance, symphony, theatre and musical productions,&#8221; said Sn\u00f8hetta&#8217;s Australasia managing director Gumji Kang.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Inspired by the qualities of stringed instruments, we have combined technical precision with atmospheric intimacy, enriched by layered timber ribbons that feel quintessentially Queensland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/24\/snohetta-st-louis-powell-hall-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/st-louis-orchestra-snohetta_dezeen_2364_hero-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"St Louis Symphony Orchestra by Sn\u00f8hetta\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Sn\u00f8hetta completes arched extension to St Louis&#8217; Powell Hall\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overhead are 100 fully-automated fly bars in the fly tower \u2013 the hollow structure directly above a theatre stage, from which theatre scenery, lighting rails, battens and curtains are controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Another feature of the building is seven skylights, which are a homage to Queensland&#8217;s First Nations cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2305381 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773414610_803_glasshouse-theatre-queensland-snohetta-blight-rayner-architecture-cultural-australia_dezeen_2364_col.jpeg\" alt=\"Glasshouse Theatre by Blight Rayner Architecture and Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It is finished with ironbark walls and deep green carpet<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, these skylights represent Queensland&#8217;s seven watersheds \u2013 areas of land that separate waters flowing to different rivers \u2013 based on water\u2011related heritage research by First Nations Elder Colleen Wall of the Dauwa Kau&#8217;bvai Nation.<\/p>\n<p>Other recently completed theatre projects include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/11\/29\/haworth-tompkins-backstage-old-vic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Old Vic extension by Haworth Tompkins<\/a>, which is clad in recycled spotlights, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/24\/snohetta-st-louis-powell-hall-extension\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta&#8217;s arched addition to St Louis&#8217;
