{"id":384992,"date":"2026-03-14T15:10:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T15:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/384992\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T15:10:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T15:10:17","slug":"one-popular-diet-strengthens-bones-while-calorie-restriction-does-opposite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/384992\/","title":{"rendered":"One Popular Diet Strengthens Bones\u2014While Calorie Restriction Does Opposite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Dieting is usually tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/weight-loss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weight loss<\/a> or muscle gain, but what you eat also plays a major role in bone health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">A large new analysis suggests that one widely followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/eating\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eating<\/a> pattern may help protect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/bones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bones<\/a>, while another popular approach could increase the risk of bone loss and fractures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Researchers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chester.ac.uk\/about\/news\/articles\/mediterranean-diet-protects-against-fractures-while-calorie-restriction-increases-bone-breakdown-study-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chester Medical Schoo<\/a>l in England found that following a Mediterranean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/diet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diet<\/a> was linked to a lower risk of hip and overall fractures, while diets that heavily restrict calories were associated with signs of increased bone breakdown.<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11672981\" alt=\"\" caption=\"A stock image illustrating food products representing the Mediterranean diet which may improve overall health status.\" captionoverride=\"Stock image: food products that represent the Mediterranean diet are seen.\" credit=\"monticelllo\" sourcealt=\"iStock \/ Getty Images Plus\" sources=\"[]\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"8256\" height=\"4520\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;aspect-ratio:inherit;object-fit:cover\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-1462724148.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The Mediterranean diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and olive oil, along with moderate amounts of fish, poultry and dairy. According to the researchers, people who closely followed this pattern were less likely to experience fractures, even though overall bone mineral density did not significantly change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The research team analyzed 30 studies involving more than 500,000 adults to better understand how popular diets affect skeletal health. Their systematic review and meta\u2011analysis examined the impact of Mediterranean, calorie\u2011restricted, high\u2011protein, low\u2011carbohydrate and ketogenic diets on bones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Ketogenic diets, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/study\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> noted, are characterized by very low carbohydrate intake combined with moderate to high fat consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">While most dietary patterns showed little effect on bone mineral density itself, the Mediterranean diet stood out for its association with a lower risk of fractures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">In contrast, calorie\u2011restricted diets were consistently linked to increased markers of bone resorption\u2014the process by which bone tissue is broken down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Study lead, Associate Professor Dr. Ioannis Kanakis, said in a statement: &#8220;Conversely, diets that heavily restrict energy, as in calorie restriction, or omit major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/food\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food<\/a> groups, can reduce mechanical loading via weight loss, alter drivers of bone remodeling and change calcium or vitamin D biological availability, thereby increasing resorption\u2014the breakdown of bone tissue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Dr. Lucy Hooper, a general practitioner who was not involved in the study, told Newsweek that bone loss can happen faster than many people realize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;Bone loss can occur relatively quickly during rapid weight loss,&#8221; she said, adding that resistance training and adequate calcium and vitamin D intake may help reduce the risk.<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11667631\" alt=\"\" caption=\"A stock image of a  couple enjoying a healthy pasta salad together.\" captionoverride=\"Stock image: a couple enjoy a healthy pasta salad together at home.\" credit=\"Daniel de la Hoz\" sourcealt=\"iStock \/ Getty Images Plus\" sources=\"[]\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;aspect-ratio:inherit;object-fit:cover\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2214843603.jpg\"\/>What the Researchers Found Overall<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">According to the authors, this is the first systematic review to collectively examine how these specific diets affect bone homeostasis, or the body\u2019s ongoing process of renewing bone tissue, across such a large number of participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review which collectively analyses the impact of these specific diets on bone homeostasis\u2014the continuous renewal of bone tissue\u2014with a high number of participants,&#8221; Kanakis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The study highlights that nutrition influences skeletal health through more than just individual nutrients.
