Broadcast insiders reveal to KATIE HIND how BBC is plotting to &#8216;see off&#8217; ITV&#8217;s struggling This Morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/bbc\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b9b44310-1fe0-11f1-b2eb-33e9b0917ef3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBC<\/a> launched its daytime show Morning Live, it insisted that it was not a carbon copy of <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/itv\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b9b83ab0-1fe0-11f1-b2eb-33e9b0917ef3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ITV<\/a>\u2019s This Morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But five years since it launched, The Mail on Sunday can reveal that bosses at the Beeb are secretly plotting to steal viewers from their rival programme by extending Morning Live\u2019s airtime, in what is set to be one of the most vicious television wars to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Sources at the Corporation say there have been discussions about the possibility of keeping the show, hosted by <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/helen-skelton\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b96e8780-1fe0-11f1-b2eb-33e9b0917ef3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Helen Skelton<\/a> and <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/gethin-jones\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b96bc860-1fe0-11f1-b2eb-33e9b0917ef3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gethin Jones<\/a>, on screen until 12.15pm rather than its current end time of 10.45am when Crimewatch Live begins, followed by Homes Under The Hammer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">BBC chiefs are hoping that viewers who\u2019ve left This Morning \u2013 as a recent drop in audience figures indicates \u2013 will switch to the lengthened Morning Live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A source at the broadcaster said: \u2018There have been a number of meetings about the possibility of extending Morning Live to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tv\/article-15523707\/morning-live-dr-ranj-singh-record-straight-quietly-replaced.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">go fully up against This Morning<\/a>. That same year, the corporation announced that it was <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-13091297\/This-Mornings-new-hosts-FINALLY-confirmed-Cat-Deeley-Ben-Shepherd-revealed-Holly-Willoughby-Phillip-Schofields-permanent-replacements.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">extending Morning Live\u2019s slot from 45 minutes to 75,<\/a> which kicked in just weeks before This Morning\u2019s new hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard took up their spots on the blue sofa in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And it appears to have paid off as today, Morning Live brings in almost double the viewers of This Morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Though the BBC show hasn\u2019t quite \u2018<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14136933\/Vivek-Sharma-Martin-Frizell-Emma-Dagnell-Morning-editor.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">seen off\u2019 its rival yet<\/a>, however tempting that might be for Morning Live\u2019s editor Emma Morris \u2013 who previously worked on the ITV show under its long-serving boss Martin Frizell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She left in 2019 to take charge of the BBC\u2019s One Show \u2013 and was later also <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-14498185\/Vanessa-Feltz-Morning-weight-loss-West-End-musical.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">handed the role of launching Morning Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Emma was senior at This Morning, she worked there for many years,\u2019 says a source. \u2018At the time it was very toxic there so it was such an amazing move for her to go over to the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018But surely it would be only natural for her to want to beat her former show.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While This Morning has <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-12114551\/This-Morning-viewing-figures-rise-Phillip-Schofields-axing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">weathered much criticism for its viewing figures<\/a>, bosses are pleased with the 700,000 who regularly tune in, despite it being well below the two million viewers that Willoughby and Schofield drew in at their peak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We are just delighted that there is some stability on This Morning now,\u2019 one staff member said. \u2018It was rocky ship for a long time, now it has settled, it\u2019s calm and Cat and Ben are <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13174709\/Cat-Deeley-Ben-Shephard-Holly-Phil-Morning-relaunch-ITV-biggest-gamble.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">going nowhere despite the silly rumours they are being replaced with Tess Daly and Vernon Kay<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Indeed, it has[itals] been rocky for the good ship This Morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The very future of the show looked in doubt in spring 2023 when Willoughby and Schofield, 63, fell out, with him latterly confessing to the Mail on Sunday that he\u2019d <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12134665\/More-photos-Phillip-Schofield-younger-ex-lover-emerge.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">had an affair with a much younger male colleague at This Morning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And then in October that year, it emerged that Willoughby, now 45, had been the victim of a terrifying plot to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12604589\/Holly-Willoughby-kidnap-kit-Morning.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">kidnap, rape and murder her by former security guard Gavin Plumb<\/a>.
