LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet was roasted for his remarks on ballet and opera, an absent Sean Penn won his third Academy Award and both Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Coogler won their first Oscars at the 98th Academy Awards. <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d came into the show the best picture favorite, and it picked up three wins in the first half of the ceremony. Anderson, the film\u2019s writer-director, earned a standing ovation for his first win in 14 nominations. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m incredibly honored to be part of this history,\u201d said Anderson, who loosely adapted Thomas Pynchon\u2019s \u201cVineland.\u201d \u201cI wrote this movie for my kids to say sorry for the housekeeping mess but hopefully they will be the generation that brings some common sense and decency.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film also won best supporting actor for Penn, and the Oscars first award for best casting,<\/a> for Cassandra Kulukundis. <\/p>\n

Immediately after Anderson\u2019s first Oscar, Ryan Coogler notched his first Academy Award, too. Coogler, the writer-director of \u201cSinners\u201d won best original screenplay, and earned his own standing ovation. <\/p>\n

\u2018KPop\u2019 and \u2018Frankeinstein\u2019 win for Netflix <\/p>\n

From the start, when host Conan O\u2019Brien sprinted through the year\u2019s nominees as Amy Madigan\u2019s character in the horror thriller \u201cWeapons\u201d in a pre-taped bit, Sunday\u2019s ceremony was quirky. There was, of all things, a tie for best live-action short film. <\/p>\n

As expected, the Netflix sensation \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d 2025\u2019s most-watched film, won best animated feature.<\/a> It was a big win for Netflix but a more qualified victory for the movie\u2019s producer, Sony Pictures. Though it developed and produced the film, Sony sold \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d to the streaming giant instead of giving it a theatrical release.<\/p>\n

On Netflix, \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d became a cultural phenomenon and the streaming platform\u2019s biggest hit. It has more than 325 million views and counting. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is for Korea and Koreans everywhere,\u201d said co-director Maggie Kang. <\/p>\n

Another Netflix release, Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein\u201d picked up a pair of awards for its lavish craft<\/a>, for costume design and makeup and hairstyling. <\/p>\n

Amy Madigan won best supporting actress<\/a> for her performance in the horror thriller \u201cWeapons,\u201d a win that came 40 years after the 75-year-old actor was first nominated, in 1986, for \u201cTwice in a Lifetime.\u201d <\/p>\n

Letting out a giant laugh as she hit the stage, Madigan exclaimed, \u201cThis is great!\u201d <\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien kicks off show<\/p>\n

Hosting for the second time, O\u2019Brien began the Dolby Theatre show alluding to \u201cchaotic and frightening times.\u201d But he argued that the current geopolitical climate made the Oscars all the more resonate as a globally unifying force. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe pay tribute tonight, not just to film, but to the ideals of global artistry, collaboration, patience, resilience and that rarest of qualities today \u2014 optimism,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to celebrate. Not because we think all is well, but because we work, and hope, for better.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien also joked, though, that the night could get political. As an alternative, like the Super Bowl halftime show, he said Kid Rock would be hosting an alterative Oscars at Dave & Busters.<\/p>\n

Some of O\u2019Brien\u2019s best digs came at the expense of the streamers. Netflix chief Ted Sarandos, he joked, was in a theater for the first time. O\u2019Brien also lamented the lack of nominees for Amazon MGM: \u201cWhy isn\u2019t the website I order toilet paper from winning more Oscars?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m honored to be the last human host of the Academy Awards,\u201d said O\u2019Brien. \u201cNext year it\u2019s going to be a Waymo in a tux.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \u2018Sinners,\u2019 \u2018One Battle\u2019 showdown<\/p>\n

The 98th Academy Awards<\/a> were steering toward a coronation for either Anderson<\/a> or Coogler.<\/a> Most would call that a win-win. <\/p>\n

Watch live from the red carpet of the 2026 Oscars in Los Angeles. This year\u2019s Academy Awards nominees include Emma Stone, Jacob Elordi, Jessie Buckley, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Teyana Taylor, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Wunmi Mosaku and more.<\/p>\n

Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d<\/a> is the favorite heading into the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. But Coogler\u2019s \u201cSinners\u201d comes in the lead nominee with a record 16 nominations<\/a>. Both filmmakers are poised to leave with their first Oscar.<\/p>\n

But little else is assured at an Academy Awards where Michael B. Jordan<\/a> or Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a> (despite the ballet diss heard \u2018round the world) could win their first Academy Award in a too-close-to-call best actor race.<\/p>\n

Theatrical looks to best streaming, again<\/p>\n

It seemed all but certain that the night\u2019s final award wouldn\u2019t go to a streaming release; Apple\u2019s \u201cCODA\u201d<\/a> remains the only streaming film to achieve that distinction. Instead, best picture is likely to go to an anomaly in today\u2019s movie industry: big-budget original films from a personal vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d were both theatrical releases shot on film<\/a>. And both came from Warner Bros., the legacy studio that\u2019s agreed to merge<\/a> with David Ellison\u2019s new media colossus, Paramount Skydance. The $111 billion deal, which awaits regulatory approval, has rattled an industry already reconciling itself to the acquisitions of MGM (by Amazon) and 20th Century Fox (by The Walt Disney Co.). <\/p>\n

Elegy may mark Sunday\u2019s Oscars. The in memoriam segment is expected to include, among many others, remembrances of Robert Redford, Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall. O\u2019Brien, who had hosted a party attended by Rob and Michele Reiner<\/a> the night before their deaths, has promised a \u201cvery powerful\u201d tribute.<\/p>\n

New this year is a best casting category<\/a>. Another innovation is a requirement that Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members watch all nominees<\/a> before voting. On the academy\u2019s streaming platform \u2014 even Oscar voting is streamed \u2014 voters had to check a box attesting to having watched each nominee before voting in a category. <\/p>\n

Though the Oscars often feel largely removed from their times, a crop of nominees that explicitly grapple with the current political moment will be center stage. That includes not just \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d which opens with a raid on an immigration detention facility, but movies like Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho\u2019s Brazilian political thriller \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d<\/a> and Jafar Panahi\u2019s Iranian revenge drama \u201cIt Was Just an Accident.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The war in Iran has particular meaning to Panahi, whose film is nominated for best international feature and for best screenplay. The esteemed Iranian filmmaker and last year\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or winner<\/a> has made films clandestinely in his native Iran despite repeated imprisonment, travel ban and even home arrest. While promoting the film, Panahi was sentenced to a year in prison<\/a>. At least one of his cowriter nominees, Mehdi Mahmoudian<\/a>, was unable to leave Iran to attend Sunday\u2019s awards. <\/p>\n

Twenty three years ago, the Academy Awards were also held amid war in the Middle East. The 2003 Oscars took place just three days before the Iraq War began. Many in Hollywood protested the war. \u201cChicago\u201d won best picture. <\/p>\n

How to watch and stream the Oscars<\/p>\n

The telecast is airing live on ABC and streaming on Hulu. (YouTube will be the new home of the Oscars beginning in 2029.)<\/p>\n
