They\u2019re going up, up, up; it\u2019s their moment<\/a>. EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seon and Teddy Park \u2014 the team behind the global smash \u201cGolden\u201d from \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d \u2014<\/a> took home the original song award at the Oscars<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

It is a first-time win and nomination for all seven members behind the hit. It is also the first K-pop song to win in the category.<\/p>\n

\u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d<\/a> is an animated, musical film about a fictional K-pop girl group tasked with saving the world by defeating demons. Netflix has said it is the platform\u2019s most watched film of all time and has amassed hundreds of millions of hours viewed worldwide. It also produced the highest charting soundtrack of 2025 with eight of its songs landing on the Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you so much to the Academy,\u201d EJAE started her speech, holding back tears. \u201cThis award is not about success, it\u2019s about resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGolden\u201d beat Diane Warren for \u201cDear Me\u201d from \u201cDiane Warren: Relentless,\u201d Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig G\u00f6ransson for \u201cI Lied to You\u201d from \u201cSinners,\u201d Nicholas Pike for \u201cSweet Dreams of Joy\u201d from \u201cViva Verdi!\u201d and Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner for \u201cTrain Dreams\u201d from \u201cTrain Dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

When nominations were announced in January, EJAE told The Associated Press<\/a> that she was totally shocked by the recognition. \u201cIt just doesn\u2019t feel real even right now. I\u2019m just still trying to digest the situation. It\u2019s just definitely a dream come true. And that\u2019s why, you know, we write \u2014 to have a song that everyone can sing, and not just sing, but make them feel good, because the lyrics (are) very uplifting, and challenge them to sing those high notes,\u201d she said. \u201cFor me, also, it\u2019s the fact that there are Korean lyrics in it. It is just kind of really crazy to see everyone from all different countries and races singing it. So, I\u2019m just forever grateful to be a part of this incredible film that I wish I grew up watching, too.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018Sinners\u2019 wins best score<\/p>\n

Three-time Academy Award winner G\u00f6ransson<\/a> won the Oscar for original score for \u201cSinners,\u201d winning his third Academy Award.<\/p>\n

G\u00f6ransson beat Jerskin Fendrix (\u201cBugonia\u201d), Max Richter (\u201cHamnet\u201d), Jonny Greenwood (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d) and Alexandre Desplat (\u201cFrankenstein\u201d). <\/p>\n

G\u00f6ransson previously won original score Oscars for 2018\u2019s \u201cBlack Panther\u201d and 2023\u2019s \u201cOppenheimer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad bought his first blues album in Sweden, 1964,\u201d G\u00f6ransson said, crediting his dad\u2019s love of music for his own. He \u201cdevoted his whole life to music,\u201d the composer said. Eventually his father gave him a guitar and opened up his world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the guitar,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt was the guitar that eventually led me to one of the greatest storytellers of our time, Ryan Coogler.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSinners\u201d is filmmaker Coogler\u2019s bluesy, vampire, gangster musical about the tenuousness of life in the Jim Crow South. But it\u2019s also a story of two brothers coming home to Mississippi in 1932 to launch a juke joint after spending time on the German front in World War I and then learning from Al Capone in gangland Chicago, as The Associated Press\u2019 Jocelyn Noveck writes in her review.<\/a> It\u2019s a also story about love, and one about music, especially the transporting power of the blues. \u201cSinners\u201d entered the night with a record-setting 16 nominations.<\/p>\n

When the nominations were announced in January, G\u00f6ransson told AP<\/a> that he was grateful for the recognition for this project in particular.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe woke up to a bunch of amazing, beautiful texts and calls. And it\u2019s very much like a family affair, this film. Everyone on \u201cSinners,\u201d we\u2019ve been working together for a long time and we\u2019re kind of like a family,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat\u2019s cool about this film, and what\u2019s incredible about this movie, is that it\u2019s about blues music. It\u2019s about a guitar player. … Anything we\u2019re hearing today on the radio and from Western culture, you know, wouldn\u2019t exist if it wasn\u2019t for blues. Ryan (Coogler) was able to show that in the movie and through the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n
