Read about the night\u2019s biggest shocks below.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d won best picture.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter a tight race this season that seemed to get even more competitive as time went on, the year\u2019s biggest award seemed like a coin flip between \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sinners\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sinners\" data-tag=\"sinners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinners<\/a>\u201d and \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d \u2014\u00a0making either winner a surprise. But \u201cBattle\u201d triumphed in the overall win count, with six over the four for \u201cSinners\u201d \u2014\u00a0despite the latter\u2019s historic number of nominations.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: Michael B. Jordan was awarded best actor.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/timothee-chalamet-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_timothee-chalamet-2\" data-tag=\"timothee-chalamet-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a> was anointed the king of the category early on due to his performance in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/marty-supreme\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marty-supreme\" data-tag=\"marty-supreme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marty Supreme<\/a>,\u201d until Michael B. Jordan\u2019s dual role in \u201cSinners\u201d took on serious momentum. In the end, \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d ended the night with no statues.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSnub: Francine Maisler didn\u2019t land the inaugural Oscar for casting for her work on \u201cSinners.\u201d\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe industry predicted that the vampire epic would be a shoo-in for best casting, but \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d casting director Cassandra Kulukundis won the statue.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: Paul Mescal, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chase Infiniti got time to shine while introducing casting director noms.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe season\u2019s three biggest acting snubs got to introduce their casting directors during this segment, which was a nice way to give them flowers for strong performances.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: It\u2019s a tie!\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe live action short film category was a shocker as \u201cThe Singers\u201d and \u201cTwo People Exchanging Saliva\u201d both took home statues, marking only the seventh tie in Oscar history.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: Autumn Durald Arkapaw won best cinematography for her work on \u201cSinners.\u201d\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLike so many races this season, it seemed to be \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d vs. \u201cSinners.\u201d But Arkapaw made history as the first woman and the first woman of color to win the top lensing award.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSnub: \u201cThe Perfect Neighbor\u201d loses Oscar for documentary feature.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Netflix doc about police body cam footage was considered to be a lock by most prognosticators, but \u201cMr Nobody Against Putin\u201d took home the statue.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: Kieran Culkin took a dig at Sean Penn\u2019s absence.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was predicted that Penn might not show up to accept his third Oscar, and Culkin\u2019s acceptance for his statue \u2014\u00a0\u201cHe couldn\u2019t be here this evening, or didn\u2019t want to\u201d \u2014\u00a0was just the right amount of tart.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSnub: \u201cButterfly\u201d didn\u2019t win animated short film, despite leading pundit picks.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnother ballot disruptor came as \u201cThe Girl Who Cried Pearls\u201d took home the Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: What was up with that camerawork?\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFrom several tripped and fumbled shots, to incorrect blocking at big moments, like not showing all of the celebrities who took the stage for the Rob Reiner tribute, the visuals didn\u2019t reflect the beauty of Hollywood\u2019s biggest night.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: What was up with the audio?\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe sound mixing was also really odd during the ceremony \u2014\u00a0most importantly with the tasteful piano fully overtaking Barbra Streisand\u2019s touching speech about Robert Redford.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tSurprise: Did Burger King buy all of the available commercials?\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt felt like Whoppers were being discussed just as much as film.
