{"id":388784,"date":"2026-03-17T01:07:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T01:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/388784\/"},"modified":"2026-03-17T01:07:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T01:07:10","slug":"what-oscar-wins-mean-to-horror-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/388784\/","title":{"rendered":"What Oscar Wins Mean to Horror Directors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Amy Madigan accepted the first Oscar of the night during the March 15 ceremony, she <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/amy-madigan-best-supporting-actress-oscar-1236683708\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shouted out<\/a> her \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/weapons\/\" id=\"auto-tag_weapons\" data-tag=\"weapons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weapons<\/a>\u201d writer and director Zach Cregger for creating her witchy role of Aunt Gladys, saying he \u201cwrote a dream part, and he let me just grab it by the throat.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt seems that, after decades of being othered and ignored at the Academy Awards, horror films are also sinking their teeth into the throat of critical acclaim. At this year\u2019s ceremony, there were four wins for the vampire tale \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sinners\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sinners\" data-tag=\"sinners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinners<\/a>,\u201d three for Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/frankenstein\/\" id=\"auto-tag_frankenstein\" data-tag=\"frankenstein\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frankenstein<\/a>\u201d as well as Madigan\u2019s statue for \u201cWeapons.\u201d Beyond that, indie horror fable \u201cThe Ugly Stepsister\u201d received a makeup and hairstyling nod, making for a hearty night for the genre \u2014 and that\u2019s not even counting nominations and wins for movies with horror in their DNA, like \u201cBugonia\u201d and \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tXero Gravity, a<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/xghorror\/\" target=\"_blank\"> genre journalist<\/a> and co-host of the podcast \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/blerdy-massacre\/id1611214850\" target=\"_blank\">Blerdy Massacre<\/a>,\u201d says she is happy \u2014\u00a0but not necessarily surprised \u2014\u00a0that horror finally had a big night at the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/oscars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscars\" data-tag=\"oscars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re in a horror renaissance right now, where it\u2019s becoming absolutely unavoidable,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s thrilling for me as a fan to see the rest of the world wake up and realize that horror is this multidimensional genre. It\u2019s a force that can\u2019t be stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s true that in the last decade, horror has found a bit of an on-ramp to be a part of the conversation. Jordan Peele\u2019s 2018 original screenplay win for \u201cGet Out\u201d seemed to signal that so-called \u201celevated horror\u201d was allowed into the award conversation, be it work from Academy favorite Del Toro to momentum for Demi Moore in \u201cThe Substance.\u201d Yet last night\u2019s ceremony seemed built around horror, from \u201cSinners\u201d nabbing the all-time nomination record, to host Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s lengthy opening built around Aunt Gladys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTed Geoghegan, an indie horror filmmaker whose work includes 2015\u2019s \u201cWe Are Still Here\u201d and 2023\u2019s \u201cBrooklyn 45,\u201d says the whole horror community is uplifted by having big visibility at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIndependent horror and the people who create it need to see successes like this,\u201d he says. \u201cThey need to see this visibility because, for so long, the Academy has overlooked horror films, even though they have been a fixture at every major studio since the dawn of cinema. In many cases, such as the Universal movies in the \u201930s and even some of the tentpole films throughout the \u201980s and \u201990s, they kept the lights on at a lot of these studios while they are making their prestige pictures. While horror does have a very big footprint in the zeitgeist, it still never sees that critical adoration that we all hope it will receive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmily Gotto, SVP of Shudder acquisitions and production, agrees that the high-profile celebration for this genre is important given the level of artistry of filmmakers and craftspeople \u2014\u00a0especially when a horror distributor and streaming platform like Shudder can secure a nomination for a small title like \u201cThe Ugly Stepsister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe horror genre is being recognized for its artistry and its storytelling and is no longer a genre that is seen as something that sits on the side,\u201d Gotto says. \u201cIt\u2019s very much a genre that is in the highest echelons of storytelling, being led by the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me of storytellers, as you could see last night. It not only crosses cultures and language barriers, but is filled with creative minds and storytellers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore the mid-2010s, it was jarring how infrequently horror films won Oscars. For example, only six performances had won in any acting category prior to last night: Fredric March in 1932\u2019s \u201cDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\u201d; Ruth Gordon in 1969\u2019s \u201cRosemary\u2019s Baby\u201d; Kathy Bates in 1991\u2019s \u201cMisery\u201d; Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in 1992\u2019s \u201cThe Silence of the Lambs\u201d; and Natalie Portman in 2011\u2019s \u201cBlack Swan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGotto says that this broadening of awards attention to include horror runs parallel with changing and broadening audience tastes as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s the kind of gradual, progressive opening up of the consumption habits of the audience,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you\u2019ve got the global, phenomenal success of a film like \u2018Sinners,\u2019 which was ultimately an out-and-out vampire movie that has a huge amount to say in a very entertaining and deep way, all of that kind of comes to the same positive outcome that we are seeing audiences take more risks with what they\u2019re watching. They might be braver in taking a chance on a genre or a sub-genre that they may not have taken a chance on before, or a foreign language film. I think consumer habits are slowly changing in that way, and we\u2019re delighted to see it because there\u2019s so much more that the genre has to give, and so many more filmmakers that are coming through and bringing us their voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUltimately, genre has the ability to bring audiences together through the universality of fear, and by celebrating artists who bring these visions to life, it creates even more power through art, Gravity says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s horror everywhere we turn in life,\u201d she says. \u201cBy exploring these stories from different perspectives, from different people who live different lives, we can really agree through terror that we actually share a lot of the same experiences.
