As\u00a0Avengers: Doomsday<\/a>\u00a0continues production, its actors are building up hype for the superhero team\u2019s next big outing.<\/p>\n

In a recent Variety<\/a> cover story, returning Gambit Channing Tatum<\/a> said his turn as the card-dealing hero will be easier on the ears, dialect-wise. If you thought it was funny not being able to understand a lick of Tatum\u2019s Cajun accent, he said the Russo brothers want him to be \u201cfunny, but they don\u2019t want to go full Deadpool\u00a0[& Wolverine]. They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious\u2014when he drops the Mardi Gras mask\u2014things do matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum has wanted to play Gambit for a long time<\/a>, but he was initially hesitant to join Avengers: Doomsday and go to London. His worries diminished with his daughter going off to middle school, but things didn\u2019t stop there. During shooting, he suffered an on-set injury with a bad leg that\u2019ll require \u201cintensive\u201d physical therapy for the next six months. It\u2019ll be his stunt double doing the fight scenes in Doomsday and Tatum\u2019s face for the tight close-ups, which has him understandably feeling a little put out. \u201cI just hate getting old,\u201d Tatum admitted. \u201cIt\u2019s not about the pain I feel in the moment, it\u2019s knowing I can\u2019t take this back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Simu Liu, back in the MCU for the first time since 2021\u2019s\u00a0Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, told Japanese publication the River<\/a> that getting to work on\u00a0Doomsday\u00a0\u201cfeels like a dream. I get to go to work and work with [actors] I respect and admire, some of them I watched when I was little. [\u2026] \u00a0I\u2019m with some amazing people, so I do feel anxious at times. But everyone is so wonderful, and it doesn\u2019t really feel like work every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

That praise particularly extends to Robert Downey Jr., here making his much-publicized return to the megafranchise as Doctor Doom<\/a>. In the wake of recent claims of on-set clashes<\/a> with another unnamed actor, Liu called Downey \u201csuch a kind, generous, and inspiring person\u201d during filming. Details on Downey\u2019s Doom remain under wraps, but Liu teased audiences will be \u201cblown away by the way he tackles this new character.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll see Gambit, Shang-Chi, and Doom do their respective things when\u00a0Avengers: Doomsday\u00a0hits theaters December 18, 2026.<\/p>\n
