{"id":39375,"date":"2025-09-02T20:26:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/39375\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T20:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:26:09","slug":"minimum-wage-increase-led-to-reduced-hours-for-staff-esri-finds-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/39375\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum wage increase led to reduced hours for staff, ESRI finds \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Recent increases to the minimum wage in Ireland led to a reduction in hours worked for minimum wage employees, according to a study by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/economic-social-research-institute-esri\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/economic-social-research-institute-esri\/\"> Economic and Social Research Institute<\/a> (ESRI).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The finding forms part of a bulletin from the institute on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-minimum-wage\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-minimum-wage\/\">minimum wage<\/a> policy and how minimum wage workers are identified by statisticians in the first instance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The study found that employees on the minimum wage saw their hours worked reduced following recent increases to the wage in law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition, it established that those who were simply asked whether they were on the minimum wage saw their hours worked reduced by approximately one hour per week following the 2020 minimum wage increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This figure rose to 1.8 hours a week in the case of employees who were determined to be on minimum wage on the basis of administrative earnings data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Low Pay Commission recommended the national minimum wage in 2020 be increased by 30c, from \u20ac9.80 to \u20ac10.10.
