{"id":39380,"date":"2025-09-02T20:29:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/39380\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T20:29:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:29:07","slug":"gardai-and-officials-meet-over-unauthorised-tricolour-flags-in-dublin-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/39380\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda\u00ed and officials meet over unauthorised tricolour flags in Dublin \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lord Mayor of Dublin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ray-mcadam\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ray-mcadam\/\">Ray McAdam<\/a> has met the assistant Garda Commissioner for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> region following the use of the national flag by anti-immigration campaigners in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tricolours have been erected without permission on lamp-posts and other public infrastructure in several areas of the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Residents in some areas have written to the council asking them to remove the unauthorised flags which they say have been erected by a \u201cminority political grouping\u201d which could \u201cundermine people\u2019s respect for the flag as a symbol of national unity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several councillors have also objected to the unauthorised erection of the tricolour with Labour councillor Darragh Moriarty describing it as the \u201cweaponisation\u201d of the national flag in a malicious attempt to intimidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council said it was \u201caware of the concerns expressed by both elected members as well as members of local communities and residents\u2019 groups regarding the proliferation of the National Flag being hung across particular areas of the city\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council was \u201ctaking the matter seriously; it is a sensitive issue which requires a considered response from all stakeholders, and which should be informed by a comprehensive risk assessment of the situation,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn this regard, area managers are meeting with senior Garda representatives in the coming week and are contacting other local groups to discuss the issue before any decisions are taken on the best way to proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Tricolour flags pictured on lamp-posts in an estate in Quarryvale, Clondalkin, Dublin on Monday, September 1st. Photograph: Colin Keegan\/ Collins <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It also said the council would \u201cengage with local elected members to seek their input in finding a resolution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, Mr McAdam on Tuesday said he had already met assistant commissioner Paul Cleary along with senior council officials in relation to the issue. \u201cWe are examining the best way in which to respond and address the issue,\u201d Mr McAdam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is not an issue that has just come about in recent days. This is something that has been developing over the course of the last number of months, across different parts of the city. But the scale and volume has increased.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Fine Gael councillor said he did not want to share his own thoughts on the matter, pending a resolution of the issue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a letter to the council, residents in the North Strand area of the city have asked for the flags to be removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe object to the unauthorised erection of these decorations.
