Tech companies are adjusting their approaches to artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled commerce after encountering some hurdles in their first attempts, CNBC reported<\/a>\u00a0Friday (March 20).<\/p>\n

OpenAI<\/a> recently confirmed that it is ending its feature that allowed users to check out in ChatGPT, Instant Checkout, and shifting its focus to facilitating sales through retailers\u2019 dedicated apps within the chatbot, according to the report.<\/p>\n

One of the problems that the company encountered while offering Instant Checkout was that the feature\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0always show real-time information on items, the report said.<\/p>\n

An OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC that the company is now prioritizing two aspects of shopping that have been most popular with ChatGPT users: search and product discovery.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstant Checkout is moving to Apps, where purchases can happen more seamlessly,\u201d the spokesperson said,\u00a0per\u00a0the report.<\/p>\n

It was reported March 11 that OpenAI had scaled back\u00a0its\u00a0plans to sell products directly through ChatGPT\u00a0checkouts<\/a>\u00a0and was shifting the focus of its commerce efforts to retailers\u2019 ChatGPT apps.<\/p>\n

That report said ChatGPT users may consider the AI assistant to be primarily\u00a0a research\u00a0and chatting tool; shoppers may not know that retailers\u2019 ChatGPT exist or how to access them; and shoppers can instead follow links to a merchant\u2019s website to make purchases there.<\/p>\n

Another tech firm that recently made an adjustment is\u00a0Google<\/a>, which updated its shopping agent platform Thursday (March 19), according to Friday\u2019s CNBC report.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s updates enable the platform to load real-time product data, let users add multiple items to their carts, and allow users to connect\u00a0loyalty\u00a0memberships, the report said.<\/p>\n

With these updates, Google aims to prevent out-of-stocks, pricing errors and other problems that can arise when product data is not up to date, per the report.<\/p>\n

PYMNTS reported Thursday that Google had worked with \u201ccommunity contributors\u201d on new options for its\u00a0agentic commerce<\/a>\u00a0standard Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).<\/p>\n

Addressing UCP\u2019s new support for Identity Linking, the company said: \u201cThat allows shoppers on UCP-integrated platforms to receive the same loyalty or member benefits they would on a retailer\u2019s site when they\u2019re logged in \u2014 like pricing or free shipping \u2014 making shopping more connected across the web.\u201d<\/p>\n
