{"id":396235,"date":"2026-03-21T07:09:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T07:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/396235\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T07:09:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T07:09:12","slug":"gerry-adams-says-civil-case-verged-on-show-trial-and-should-never-have-been-brought-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/396235\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerry Adams says civil case \u2018verged on show trial\u2019 and \u2018should never have been brought\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On an unseasonably sunny Friday afternoon, the Falls Road in west Belfast found itself bathed in golden light. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Out of the sunshine stepped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-adams\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gerry-adams\/\">Gerry Adams<\/a>, the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> leader, who hours earlier had seen a civil case taken against him by three men injured in IRA bombings in England \u201cdiscontinued\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This was Adams\u2019s moment in the sun; addressing the reporters clustered on the pavement as Bobby Sands looked down on him from the mural behind, he said he welcomed the claimants\u2019 decision to drop the case. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he had attended \u201cout of respect\u201d for them but it \u201cverged on a show trial\u201d and \u201cshould never have been brought\u201d, he said. It was \u201cclearly &#8230; an unorthodox and strategically important political case taken for that purpose\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Standing before the microphones in a blue shirt topped with a padded blue gilet, a pin of the Palestinian flag at his throat, Adams was serious, unsmiling; this was no joyful triumph, his demeanour said, but an occasion for quiet dignity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI never claimed this to be a victory,\u201d was his response to one reporter who questioned him about remarks by the claimants\u2019 lawyers that the outcome \u201cdoes not represent a victory for Mr Adams, but the reverse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Adams said he had \u201cnothing but sympathy\u201d for the claimants, and had been \u201cmoved\u201d by the testimony of the two men who \u201ctold of their own personal difficulties and circumstances within the explosions and following the explosions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFamily members of mine have been killed, I\u2019ve been shot myself, so I know what it\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was paying his own legal bill \u2013 \u201csupported by friends\u201d \u2013 because he was \u201cnever going to burden the claimants\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But he thought they had been \u201cbadly advised\u201d and asked, \u201cWhy did the lawyers decide to take this course of action?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/03\/19\/gerry-adams-recalls-very-bad-history-of-british-rule-as-london-civil-case-nears-end\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gerry Adams recalls \u2018very bad history\u2019 of British rule as London civil case nears endOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Barry Laycock, a victim of the 1996 Arndale shopping centre bombing in Manchester, John Clark, injured in the bombing of the Old Bailey in London in 1973, and Jonathan Ganesh, who was caught up in a bombing in the London Docklands in 1996, had sued Adams for \u00a31 in damages, claiming he was a leading member of the Provisional IRA on those dates, including of its army council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, Laycock said he was \u201ccompletely devastated\u201d they had had to drop their case but said they \u201cregard these proceedings as vindication of their position\u201d, and it had been due to costs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During the two-week trial in London\u2019s high court Adams said he had \u201cno involvement whatsoever\u201d in the bombings and was never a member of the Provisional IRA, with his lawyers claiming the case should be thrown out as an abuse of process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Adams told reporters that during his two days of evidence he \u201ccategorically rejected all of the claims being made\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI contested this case and defended myself against the smears and false accusations being levelled against me. I asserted the legitimacy of the republican cause and the right of the people of Ireland to freedom and self-determination.
