{"id":397405,"date":"2026-03-22T00:47:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T00:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/397405\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T00:47:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T00:47:18","slug":"funeral-service-honours-late-singer-dolores-keane-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/397405\/","title":{"rendered":"funeral service honours late singer Dolores Keane \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/03\/16\/dolores-keane-soulful-traditional-music-singer-forged-a-path-for-other-women\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/03\/16\/dolores-keane-soulful-traditional-music-singer-forged-a-path-for-other-women\/\">Dolores Keane<\/a> was remembered as an extraordinary musician and immensely brave person who had spoken openly about her illness and addiction, during her funeral service in Galway on Friday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hundreds of mourners, including President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> and former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-d-higgins\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-d-higgins\/\">Michael D Higgins<\/a>, attended the service at the tiny local church of St Patrick and St Cuana in the village of Caherlistrane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Keane, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/03\/16\/dolores-keane-distinctive-irish-folk-singer-dies-aged-72\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/03\/16\/dolores-keane-distinctive-irish-folk-singer-dies-aged-72\/\">passed away last Monday<\/a> aged 72, was a founding member of De Dannan and enjoyed a five-decade long career including playing a central role in A Woman\u2019s Heart, the bestselling Irish album of all time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an emotional and sometimes humorous eulogy, Dolores\u2019s brother Matt Keane described her as \u201cthe sister we loved to death and often threatened to strangle\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He also paid tribute to the local community for its support in recent days, especially noting the thousands who took part in a candlelit procession through Headford, commenting that \u201cSarah in the pound shop\u201d will have completely sold out of candles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHer face shone when she was on the telly. She had presence. She did a lot of telly over the years and we were always proud of her,\u201d he said of his sister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe was sometimes a bit of a tearaway, as you might know. Dolores, of course, she was a mother, she was a grandmother, she was the sister we loved to death and often threatened to strangle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut now she is the sister who is going to leave a massive gap in our lives. A huge gap, not easily filled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Friend of the family Fr Peter Gannon, highlighted the bravery of Keane for speaking openly about her diagnosis with breast cancer and her 20-year-long battle with alcoholism.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Portrait of musician Dolores Keane at the Harcourt Hotel in Dublin in 1993. Photograph: Getty  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/2026\/03\/20\/dolores-keane-will-forever-be-the-sound-of-the-second-time-continuity-and-change-coincided-in-ireland\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barry McCrea on the late traditional and world singerOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe gave to us her great love of music, the great names that she shared the stage with, the fun, the laughter and the lifelong friendships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut she also, with such honesty and dignity, opened up about her vulnerability, her personal struggles, her addiction, her fight and recovery from cancer and her determination to make things well again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat takes courage, a lot of courage, all being poured out, as the great title of the song goes, from a woman\u2019s heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gannon said heaven was likely to be a much noisier place following the passing of the lauded musician. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUp in heaven, they are used to the quiet nights. Well, they can forget about that now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are a lot of songs to be resurrected and the heavenly choir has only got better. Photograph: Hany Marzouk\/PA Wire <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The service was also addressed by a member of the Caherlistrane Kilcoona Community Council, who highlighted the importance of Keane to the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhen a stranger would ask us, \u2018where are you from?\u2019 we could answer Caherlistrane, Dolores Keane country, and there was instant recognition in their eyes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are so proud to claim her and call her ours. It meant so much to us when she claimed us back. As she often did in the many mentions in interviews down through the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe loved Caherlistrane and Caherlistrane loved her. While we shared her with other people around the world, we knew a Dolores that the rest of the world did not know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe could have a chat to her in the local shop in the morning and see her on the telly that night.
