{"id":39758,"date":"2025-09-03T00:41:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/39758\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T00:41:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:41:06","slug":"gardai-paid-speed-camera-operators-e18m-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/39758\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda\u00ed paid speed camera operators \u20ac18m last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a> paid \u20ac18 million to private operators of speed cameras last year, some \u20ac5 million more than it received in revenue from fines for speeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The figures were obtained by Irish MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cynthia-ni-mhurchu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cynthia-ni-mhurchu\/\">Cynthia N\u00ed Mhurch\u00fa<\/a> following a request under Freedom of Information laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She questioned why revenue from privately operated speed cameras fell by 15.9 per cent between 2023 and last year. Garda\u00ed received \u20ac15.3 million in revenue from speeding fines in 2023, having paid private operators \u20ac13 million. This left a \u20ac2.3 million surplus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na paid out \u20ac13.4 million to private operators up to August 18th in 2025, but has not revealed how much revenue it has taken in for this period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed refused to reveal why the revenue figure fell from almost \u20ac15.5 million in 2023 to \u20ac12.9 million last year, saying it was a \u201cfunction of enforcement activity and driver compliance\u201d. Therefore, this matter relates to operational policing activity and falls outside the scope of a Freedom of Information request to An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph Tipperary were the two highest-grossing counties for the speed vans in the period covered by the request, followed closely by Cork and Kildare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Between January 2023 and early June 2025, \u20ac6.2 million was collected from motorists in Dublin, \u20ac3.3 million came from Tipperary, and \u20ac2.9 million was collected from Cork, with decreasing amounts for Kildare, Galway, Wicklow, Westmeath, Limerick, Mayo and Cavan\/Monaghan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms N\u00ed Mhurch\u00fa, who is a member of the EU\u2019s transport committee, has called for a greater concentration of speed vans at  traffic-incident black spots and on rural roads where speeding  dramatically affects  road safety. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She estimated that 10 to 15 per cent of all crashes and 30 per cent of all fatal collisions across the EU are the result of speeding, or inappropriate speed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms N\u00ed Mhurch\u00fa welcomed an extra \u20ac9 million in funding for up to 100 new speed cameras to enhance road safety at the end of 2024, but said continual investment in new technology is needed to catch those who are flouting the law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" positioning of the current stock of speed vans to ensure they are  placed in areas with the highest risk of road fatalities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She also called for consideration of re-education courses as a judicial sanction for drivers who are repeatedly caught speeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na has been contacted for comment.
