{"id":397857,"date":"2026-03-22T08:39:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T08:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/397857\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T08:39:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T08:39:10","slug":"former-dublin-lord-mayor-leaves-estate-of-e1-9m-probate-records-show-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/397857\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Dublin lord mayor leaves estate of \u20ac1.9m, probate records show \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former Dublin lord mayor Michael Donnelly left an estate valued at \u20ac1.9 million when he died in December 2004, according to papers published by the Probate Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donnelly, of Glendoher Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rathfarnham\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rathfarnham\/\">Rathfarnham<\/a>, was a member of the Fianna F\u00e1il party, and served as a public representative for more than 30 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was first elected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\">Dublin City Council<\/a> in 1985 and remained a member until he lost his seat in 2009. From 1990 to 1991 he held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition to serving at Dublin City Council he was a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/seanad-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/seanad-eireann\/\">Seanad \u00c9ireann<\/a> from 1977 to 1981.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Donnelly was predeceased by his wife, Aileen, and was father to three sons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An accountant by profession, he served as a director of Irish Life Assurance from June 1991 to May 2001. He also served as the chairman of the College of Commerce, a council member of the College of Technology Kevin Street, a council member of Dublin\u2019s VEC and honorary treasurer of Prisoners Aid Through Community Effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In other grants of probate, Dr Donal J Cotter of Temple Gardens, Dartry, Dublin, left an estate valued at \u20ac3.83 million when he died in June 2024, in his 99th year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cotter is remembered as a pioneer of child psychiatry in Ireland and practised at St James\u2019s Hospital until his retirement in 1990.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He edited The Chequerboard Boy (2016), a book detailing the psychological treatment of a young boy with scoliosis, and contributed to other publications on child psychiatry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/03\/21\/harry-clarke-plaque-marks-birthplace-of-dublin-genius-of-light-and-colour\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Clarke plaque marks birthplace of Dublin \u2018genius of light and colour\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joan Costello of Eglinton Park, Donnybrook, left an estate valued at \u20ac2.04 million when she died in April 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Costello was the widow of prominent Fine Gael strategist, attorney general and, having left politics, president of the High Court, Declan Costello. Through her marriage she was daughter-in-law of former taoiseach John A Costello.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Born Joan Fitzsimons, Costello and her husband famously hosted a dinner, at John A Costello\u2019s request, for then US senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-f-kennedy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-f-kennedy\/\">John F Kennedy<\/a> and his wife Jackie Kennedy in 1955. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The dinner took place at Jammet\u2019s, a French restaurant on Nassau Street, which was Jackie Kennedy\u2019s favourite restaurant in Dublin. Kennedy later wrote to Fr Joseph Leonard that her husband Jack had been \u201cenchanted\u201d with Joan Costello during the evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joan and her husband were married in 1953.
